My LG front loading dryer doesn't dry well

Check the exhaust vent when running and be sure there is a good flow of air. You may have to clean the exhaust pipes all the way through. Dryers require a good flow of air for proper operation.

Clean Your Dryer Vent to Prevent Fires

Most people have no idea how much lint gets past your dryer's lint trap. The amount is substantial. Over Time your dryer vent pipe becomes coated with dryer lint. If your dryer vent hasn't been cleaned in over a year, you may have a potential fire hazard on your hands. Once the vent becomes restricted your dryer will take longer to dry a load. Lack of airflow will cause your dryer to over heat. If your dryer vent is over eight feet long, your dryer vent should be cleaned annually. Some of the early warning signs of lint blockage include:

  • Is the top of your dryer hot to the touch?
  • Does your dryer take over 50 minutes to dry a load?
  • Do you ever experience a moldy smell on your clothing?
  • Is dryer lint gathering on the inside of the dryer door?
  • Does it seem like your clothes have extra lint on them?
  • Is your house dusty? Dryer lint is almost microscopic and goes everywhere.

Most dryer vents have a flap or a screen located at the exit. This must be cleaned on aregular basis. Where your dryer vent exit's the building is usually the first place dryer lint will gather. It is very important when you have your vent cleaned they address the exit.
Dryer vents come in all different shapes and sizes. The dryer vent itself refers to the exhaust pipe inside the wall. This pipe should be a 4" steel pipe that exits right outside or some times up through the rooftop. Some builder's occasionally use the more rectangular gutter piping, or the flexible metal piping. Both of these can be inefficient. If your home has a foil accordion type material inside your wall, this needs to be replaced immediately. This material is actually flammable, if you ever had a dryer fire it would have no chance of staying contained.

A dryer vent that exits on to a tile roof can pose another potential airflow restriction. Much of the time builders use the same gooseneck type exit as on a standard shingle roof. Unfortunately these vents aren't long enough, and tend to vent right on the tile with very little space. The fix for this problem is to fabricate an extension that raises the vent at least four inches above the tile.
Another common problem is a crushed transition tube. The transition tube is the pipe that connects the dryer to the wall vent. Most of the time delivery people use the foil type transitions because of ease of installation. Unfortunately this material can easily become crushed or restricted. This type of material is actually paper and can ignite. Unlike the all metal venting material that the dryer manufacturers recommend this material is a real fire hazard. (see your owner's manual or the labels on back of the dryer.)
Unfortunately a blocked dryer vent can break your dryer. The two main parts that break, are the element and the thermostat. The excessive heat produced by a blocked vent is a repair waiting to happen. Many of the new high efficiency dryers have warning lights that tell you when your vent needs cleaning. Some of these dryers even lower the temp on their own to keep from overheating.
The best way to test your dryer vent's efficiency is to disconnect the tube from the wall and dry a load of clothes. If your clothes get dry in a reasonable time it's your dryer vent. Over 15,000 dryer related fires occur every year. Most of these fires could have been prevented, with an annual vent cleaning. Don't become a statistic get your dryer vent professionally cleaned today.

Hi mandolins23...
Sounds like your venting system is plugging up, try these suggestions below...

Check and clean if necessary your vent hose.
If you vent hose "seems" to be clean then, try running the dryer with the vent hose off and see if the dryer is not running hot anymore.
Make sure your lint screen is in place and has no tears or holes in it and is still firmly attached to the frame.
If you are running too hot you are not moving enough air thru the system.
It could be that the fan blade is plugged up.
The problem could be a large lint ball build up in the center of the fan or a sock, thin pants,a pen, etc. that has gotten into the fan by falling down the hole where the lint screen is normally inserted.
You have to find the air restriction to solve the problem.
It also can be a loose or worn out blower wheel/fan.
Please take time to rate me.

The dryer is getting the clothes hot, but not drying. What causes this problem? Thanks

venting issue, you can disconnect vent tube and run a load of clothes if it dries then it is the vent tube, if not then the dryer will need disassembled and all the lint clean out from the lint trap to the end of the dryers vent tube, if is recommended to clean the lint out of the inside of the dryer at least once a year, varying on usage, and the lint screen each time before/after use. Hope this helps Tim

Dryer takes too long to dry clothes. Heating element is working because clothes are hot but it takes almost 2 dry cycles to dry clothes.

It sounds like you're lacking air flow. I'm sure you're cleaning the lint trap / filter - but have you clean the VENT HOSE / PIPE?

The 4 in vent hose is supposed to be cleaned annually. If you have the flexible vinyl hose, replace it with either steel, aluminum or flexible aluminum tubing instead. Once you've removed the vinyl hose, it will collect a lot less dust and can be cleaned without worry of puncture.

A typical dryer vent brush.

Make sure there's no obstruction to the flap outside, too. Once cleaned the dryer operation should be restored to new again.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thank you.

this website is very helpful, I would disconnect vent tube and dry a load of clothes, if they dry then my vent tube is restricted or too long. If it does not then my dryer needs to be cleaned out on the inside from the lint trap down. I hope this helps Tim

Dryer has to run two or three times to dry clothes seem to be hot enought. any suggestions

Check your lint filter. Keep it clean every time you dry clothes. If it is clean ther is a good chance the hose that carries the hot air and lint from machine to the outside of the building. Also the lint fan may be burned ot. YOu should feel air blowing when you pull the lint filter out of the machine. If not the motor is shot.

Getting Hot, but not drying the clothes

there has got to be some restriction in the vent system. Take the vent pipe completely off and look in the tube coming directly out of the dryer. Also make sure the drum is turning good speed.

Not drying

It may not be your heating element. Your dryer lint vent pipe out the back of the machine or maybe out the side may be plugged. You have to pull the machine out and clear that pipe or rebuild it out to a soffit vent or static vent if it is in the attic, or out through your crawl space. This will make a huge difference. If that hot air and moisture doesn't get out of the machine it just goes back into your clothes.
Good luck!!

Needs 2 drying cycles

I am assuming you are cleaning the lint filter. Check the vent pipe out the back. If it vents into the wall, the piping leading to outside may be plugged. Your washer is spinning the clothes good, right? If the clothes are excessively wet they will take longer to dry also. If its practical, remove the vent hose and let it dry blowing into the room. It may suck but just once for a test.
