Do you see frost built up on back wall of freezer if so it is not defrosting and this is what needs to be checked, remove back wall of freezer and check these;
Defrost heater-- it usually is at bottom of the evap. coil, to check it remove wires to it ,use a meter set to the lowest ohms setting and check for somewhere between 10-50 ohms if that is what yours is its good if meter reads OL replace defrost heater

Defrost thermostat-- if clips to the top of the evap. coil and is metallic,round , about the diameter of a quarter with a plastic side with 2 wires coming from it(do not confuse it w.thermister),remove wires and check for ZERO ohms WHEN TESTING IT MUST BE COLD so check it when frost is built up,IF meter reading is OL (WHEN COLD) its the problem

Defrost timer or defrost control if has digital display to show tempature
check timer(it could be anywhere except in freezer) by turning till you hear a click,the defrost heater should come on within 5 minutes if the heater does come on the timer is the problem and needs to be replaced,if the heater does not come on the above mentions parts (heater/t-stat) will be the problem.
defrost control is hard for unskilled lay persons to check SO IF heater and defrost t-stat are good replace control

Hope this helps,

Gene

Top half of upright freezer is warm

Hello Karen;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The top half of your freezer is warm because your cooling (evaporator) coil is on the bottom.

With your unit there are generally two cooling problems:

1.) Frozen Drain - You freezer will go through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours. When this occurs, everything shuts down with the exception of your lights. Your defrost heater turns on for about 20-30 minutes, defrost you cooling coil and them turns your unit back on.

Most common, is that you have a frozen drain. If you have a frozen drain, when your unit goes through the defrost cycle, if your drain is plugged then the condensate builds up on your cooling coil and restricts the air flow. Use a hair dryer and melt the ice.

2.) Freezer fan motor is bad - Your freezer fan motor may be bad. This is easily replaced.

Ok, Lets get it done. I have faith in you.

a.) Unplug your unit.

b.) With a screw driver remove the 6 screws holding the bottom cover. You control may be in the way.

c.) I know you can do this. Remove the back cover. Is you cooling coil blocked with Ice? Defrost with a hair dryer. Do not use metal tools, you may damage the cooling coil.

b.) After defrost, Is you cooling fan running. You can do this as well. There are only two contacts to remove and a ground wire. If it is not running purchase a new one.

I have faith in you Karen. Call me and I will walk you through this.

Not cooling and led blinking from top to bottom

Your refrigerator is in "Cooling Off" mode, or sometimes called "Store Display Mode", which basically allows everything in the fridge to function except for the Cooling system. Press and hold down the "Lighting" and "Freezer" buttons for 5 seconds until you hear the "Ding Ding". Your 'fridge will be working again.

FUM21D upright freezer, NOT frost free. Top shelf coil cooling, others are not. Sides are not as warm as usual. Running constantly. Coolant leak? Why top shelf cooling?

I note this is in fact not a frost free freezer and that there is not an evaporator OR a condensor fan. If it is running constantly and the cooling coils are clear as in not covered in lint then the most likely cause is a low coolant level. A low coolant level will allow partial but not total system cooling. The only way to know for sure is to have the systems pressures tested. At that point who ever checks the coolant pressure will have to determine why the coolant leaked out, repair the leak and then re-service the system with coolant.
