MY AC WORKS FOR FOUR HOURS PER DAY AND BARELY COOLS DOWN THE HOUSE, NOT MUCH AIR COMING UP TO THE UPSTAIRS OF THE HOUSE. AFTER 4 HOURS, THE OUTSIDE UNIT SHUTS UP AND NOT MORE COOL AIR COMES IN. BEFORE THIS HAPPENED A MONTH AGO, I GOT A NEW MOTOR BLOWER PUT IN THE SYSTEM BECAUSE IT STOPPED WORKING. TWO WEEKS LATER THE NEW PROBLEM BEGAN. MY UNIT IS A CARRIED 38CK AND IS 14 YEARS OLD. I HAVE OWNED THIS HOUSE FOR 11 YEARS, BUT NEVER HAD THE AC SERVICE BEFORE. SHOULD I TRY TO GET IT FIX OR SHOULD I GET A NEW UNIT?

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2011

Oh, okay. The four hours starts at 1230 to 430pm. No, there is not any ice on the conncections in the outside unit. The fan comes on as it is supposed to. When the AC stops working, the fan keeps on.

I am not understanding exactly what is happening with your unit. You say it only runs for 4 hours a day and then say that after 4 hours the outside unit shut off. But you don't describe the condition of the outside unit! Is there ice on your outside unit after it runs for four hours or is it so hot that the housing would fry an egg? Since it works for four hours and then stops working, I would guess that ice forms on the condenser grill which tells the thermostat that your air is much colder than it actually is. Then it takes time for the ice to melt off again. Am I close? If so this condition is usually caused by your unit being low on freon making everything work harder. But it could also mean that you have a leak in the system somewhere. But it shouldn't be much of a leak or it wouldn't run for the 4 hours.
I would recommend you charge it to the correct level and then check for leaks.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am sorry that I wasn't clear enough. No, there is not ice on the outside unit and is not too hot either. The Ac just stops working after four hours. I noticed the outside unit stops running and there isn't cool air coming in. When the cool air comes in, it is not cold enough in the upstairs of the house.

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2011

Is there any rhyme or reason to when the four hour starts and stops? Does it do it at the same time every time or does it start and stop on its own?
Do you see any ice on the connections in your outside unit? Give me something to work with here.
Does your furnace fan come on like it is supposed to? It is your furnace blower that will circulate the cold air to the upstaids, NOT the outside chiller unit.

Do you still have the original thermostat installed or have you had that replaced in the recent past?

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2011

I JUST HAD IT REPLACED LAST MONTH. IT USED TO BE A PROGRAMABLE THERMOSTAST, I CHANGED IF FOR A REGULAR ONE CAUSE I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE PROGRAM IN THE OLD THERMOSTAT WAS STUCKED.

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2011

Unfortunately, the thermostat you can use with the carreir heat pump is limited. Many of the universal units will work with the ac units but not the heat pump, so that could be part of the problem.
I am suspecting the thermostat on the outside unit, since the time that it comes on are the coolest times of the day.
When you had the fan motor replaced did the AC technician do an ohm check of your compressor to verify that it is working? I don't think that is the problem but trying to rule one thing out after another.

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2011

Okay, thanks. I am not sure if he did an ohm check of the compressor. He is coming back tomorrow. Well, my AC unit is 14 years old. Do you think i will be better off buying a new system than keep fixing this old one?

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2011

Personally, I would get an estimate on what it would cost to fix your unit completely and take it back to factory specs. If that estimate is more that 25% of the cost of a new unit, I would replace. What I recommend to my clients is that they keep track of the repair costs from the day it was installed and when those repair costs reach 50% of the cost of the unit, it is usually time to replace versus keep repairing.

Thank you so much for your help with this. I will ask them that tomorrow when they come.

Why can't I lower my honeywell 8500 below 67 on cool?

With a two story house you have to be aware that cold air flows downwards so any cold air coming from an ac unit will flow downstairs( normally down the stairway) so unless you can close off the down stairs then the up stairs unit will be cooling downstairs as well. Ac units have a thermostat located in the air intake and it cools until the cold air has risen to that point. In effect the space above the ac unit will be hotter than the floor. Knowing how they work ,you can see that the upstairs unit will never reach the set temperature because the cold air is continually heating from the house and will never get to the top thermostat.
So your solutions are
1-- fit controls that restrict the cold air from leaving the upper floor (Doors)
2--don't run the upper ac unit unless you are living up there (waste of money
)3 place an ac in each upper room and keep the room door closed

The cooled air is coming out at a very weak rate. The ac unit outside is blowing out cool air when the neighbor's is blowing out warm air. The house is just not getting cool. AC has been on for 4 days...

Turn off your A/C and put your fan switch in ON or FAN. Run the fan only for approx 3 hours. Check your air filter and clean/replace as necessary. Also check your evaporator coil and clean if necessary. It is possible that your evaporator coil is frozen up from a dirty filter or coil. If it continues to be a problem, you probably have a refrigerant problem which will require a certified service technician to address. Try taking care of the filter and coil first. :-)

AC not cooling during the day

Your AC cooling efficiency is low when he ambient temperature is high and naturally it cools well when the outside temperature drops.

Please remove the filter on the grill and try to clean it under the tap water and after removing all the dust fix it back to the unit. This would increase the cooling efficiency of the unit.

Your AC is also five years old. Please avoid frequent opening of doors or windows.

Ensure that the exhaust fan and the blower of your unit are functioning normal.

The technician might not have done a proper job in fixing the area where the refrigerant would have leaked out. Please check the refrigerant pressure to ensure that no further refrigerant leak has taken place. Or even servicing your unit he would have punchered the tubes resulting in very slow leak of refrigerant resulting in no cooling or less cooling. It takes around a month to feel the pinch of it and the refrigerant. One fine morning after sometime the unit will run and it would start throwing hot air instead of cool breeze!

My attic air conditioner will stay at 81 degrees in the hottest part of the day only when it is sunny when it is cloudy it works fine I have a small 900 sq foot ranch

if the difference in termperature is between 15 and 20 degrees between the inlet and outlet, the unit is doing all it can and is undersized. if not check for airflow problems, filters, dirty coils etc. and if that is all good, then there may be issues with the refrigerant charge

Heating blowing coo air downstairs and warm upstairs?

Some of this depends on where the air handler/furnace is located. Most often in two story houses, it's in the attic upstairs, or in a closet upstairs. A duct routes air from the furnace to the downstairs supply duct, so it is a distance from the air handler.
When the unit first initiates a heating cycle, that duct is going to be full of cool air, and the duct itself will be cool. So the furnace has to run long enough to push the cool air out, as well as warm the duct up, before your going to feel warm air at the registers downstairs.

Keep in mind, heat rises. And, your thermostat only monitors the immediate area where it's located. In your case, upstairs.
Two story houses are problematic because of this. And one way around it is to have a damper system installed that distributes the air upstairs or downstairs based on a thermostat located in those spaces. There would be 2 dampers, and 2 thermostats (one upstairs, one downstairs). Each stat would control a damper, and the call for heat or cooling.

Let me know if you would like to consider a system like this, and I can point you to components to use. I've put several system like this in.
