Onkyo TX-DX838 When switched on, the selected FM/AM/CD etc) is displayed for few seconds and then showing "Protect". The unit then goes into 'standby' mode as indicated by the blinking orange LED.

Question edited to correct all the typos!

Onkyo support suggested I reset the unit by holding the video 1 button while pressing power to reset to factory default, which according to the Tech will reset the Logic controls of the unit.

Does the display show you are in protect mode , or is a light indicating that? The unit automatically switches to standby when the
"Hardware" - "Power Management" - "Auto Standby"
setting in the Setup menu functions are set. The protective circuit function may have been activated.
If this has occurred, "AMP Diag Mode" appears on the
display when the unit is turned on again, and the unit
enters diagnostic mode. If the results of the diagnosis is
that there is no problem, the "AMP Diag Mode" display
disappears and you can use the unit normally again. If
"CHECK SP WIRE" appears on the display, the speaker
cables may be short-circuited. Make sure bare speaker
wires are not touching each other or the back panel of
the unit, then turn the unit on again. If "NG" is displayed,
immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet
and contact your dealer.
• The protective circuit function may have been activated
because the temperature of the unit rose abnormally.
If this happens, then the power will continue to turn off
after you have turned the unit on again. Make sure the
unit has plenty of space for ventilation around it, wait for
the unit to cool down sufficiently, and then try turning it
on again. This is out of your users manual.

General suggestions are to remove all speakers and speaker wiring with unit off. Turn on and see if problem has stopped. If not, let unit cool down if warm and try again later. If problem is still there it needs repair shop work. I fht problem went away, shut off power and connect one speaker at a time and testing. Keep adding speakers one at a time with power off and see if a bad speaker or wire set can be located

Hello, I am sorry about your issue. I suggest that you reset the receiver. With the receiver on press and hold vcr/dvr and then press on/standby. When the display shows clear let go. The receiver will shut down. Unplug for 30 seconds. Plug back in and turn on. Test audio. This procedure will bring the unit back to factory defaults. Does the display show "tuned" or "FM Stereo"? This would normally indicate a good reception. The tuner has a signal level threshold and if the signal gets to week, the receiver mutes to prevent noise in the speakers. Swithing to mono make reception less intolerant. Does the problem also occur, when you switch to mono?

there is short inside, usaull with copacitors u might want to have it looked at

there is an internal shorting inside the amp that puts the amp in protect mode also check if the amp comes on after disconnecting the speakers

Hey there..Sorry.When the amps are over powered they blow the main circuit and short causing the amp to turn on the right back off to protect mode.That you will have to send in to get fix..Look behind the amp and see if theres any wires touching or grounding out.My favorite amps are from onkyo and believe me i've done this a few times to 5 aps I've had.So I up graded to the tx sr 906 It rocks and will blow every speaker I have before the amp will go..Hope this helps you and good luck..Have a great day...

Hold the VCR/DVR button in and press the ON/OFF Standby button. The display should briefly read CLEAR and then the unit switches off. If that clears protect mode, you'll need to redo the Audyssey and configuration setup as these will have been cleared by the reset.

The protect mode is a built in safety message, indicating that theres a fault somewhere with-in the unit, and it wont let the unit come on fully or more damage will occour. This unit is a solid state device, and you should not attempt to use it or open it or try any self repair as it will cause more damage. If this unit is more then a few years old , it might just be the time to start looking around at all the back to school sales on electronics, as to have this unit serviced will cost an estimate fee as well as parts and labor. If you want to invest a few bucks into this machince , then go for it, but its most likly will cost 1/2 or more then the cost of the entire unit did when it was new to have it repaired. It is up to you. Good Luck
