The D50 works with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it will only work with devices specifically designed to accept SDHC cards. The D50 wasn't. It only works with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

SOURCE: CAMERA SAYS 4g sd CARD IS UNUSABLE BUT WORKS IN MY NIKON

Two possible solutions. Your manual only lists cards up to 1gb. It may not be compatible with the your larger 4gb card. Your camera requires that each card be formatted for it. Have you formatted the card? In case you need it, here is a link to your camera's owners manual:

SOURCE: D50 Nikon SD Card won't tell me how many photos I have left

Are you getting "1.0" or "1.0k" on the display?

If you're getting "1.0k" that means more than 1000 but less than 1100 pictures. Try taking a hundred pics and see whether that drops the number down to nine-hundred-something.

My Nikon D50 camera says

It thinks that the SD card is full - try re-formatting if you have no photos there. The SD functions the same as a PC hard drive, and if the directory 'tracks' are corrupt, anything could happen. Else try a new SD card.

Nikon d50 continuos shooting

Should an answer be given ??? TRY ANOTHER APPROVED MEMORY CARD. If the problem clears it's the card. If it doesn't it's either the camera or you haven't set up the camera correctly. READ THE MANUAL.
