HD56W58 rear projection tv started snapping and popping with a high pitched squeal then went dead

What brand and model? Is it a rear projection type TV or LCD? What does this horrible sound, sound like? If its a rear projection TV the horrible sound could be a failed cooling fan that its sensing a problem with and shutting off, if its an LCD tv and its a high pitched squeal its most likely a failed power supply board.

If there is no picture but sound is audible then replacing the projection lamp will do otherwise, the TV requires to be diagnosed for any other hardware damages.

No guarantees with this diagnosis. But it sounds like an HT ( high tension) leak This is often caused by the lead becoming partly unplugged ( being bumped or moved) and because of dust buildup it arcs making a high pitched hissing whistle.Ther lamp may also have been affected by the HT leak. The safest option for you is to call a service technician to it, as opening it up could cosntitute a a danger to the unskilled.

In this model the horizontal drive coil vibrates and makes a high pitch squeal. Most times it is intermitent. Touching on the coil with something (non electrical, like wood) will make it stop or change it's pitch. The fix my shop uses: It's not to technical, but, we put fingernail polish around the coil. It's a remedy I've used for decades and has always worked. Some shops use a hot glue gun. With the back open you can hear the coil to locate it. When fixing the problem have the set unplugged. When a technician is working on a television while it's plugged in. He uses only one hand and stays away from the high voltage.
