try these:-

• connect it to pc and on it
• vaccum the barrel of lens
• changing mem. card and batt. for 2min.
• shake it.
• on and off in different positions
• hit the part near lens softly with palm (trust me this made mine work)

For the message that show's on your camera here's is what your need to do. 1. Remove the memory card and check for the physical lock toggle.
2. Toggle the lock on and off.
3. Try blowing on the memory card and the memory card port so it will be cleaned somehow. here is the picture of the lock toggle of the SD memory card

You'd better buy a opening tool together if you want to fix by yourself.

it is a pretty major problem for the Coolpix it seems. The internal coupling of the zoom lens is somewhat fragile, and a slight tap at the wrong time can mess up the system. It could have been something as small as a bump while it was being carried in your pocket. The problem is that you'll have to pay for repairs on it since technically it's not a camera error but something that Nikon says happened during usage.

Some owners seem to have been able to solve the problem with a gentle bump to the side of the camera, or some gentle twisting on the lens itself. I don't necessarily recommend that- or, at least I would call Nikon first and see what they have to say about cost of repairs. Other people say that once you do get it fixed, put the camera in Playback mode before you switch it off so that the problem doesn't happen again.

You may have dust or some liquid blocking the cap from opening. Take a q t tip and clean cap. Use the q t tip to try to jar cap loose.

i had the error and i just banged the left side of the camera against my palm a few times and turned it back on. It worked for me maybe it will work for you
