Porting your old number over to a new phone and carrier will have nothing to do with the phone shutting off every few minutes. The phone should turn on and stay on weather active on a network or not. Your phone may have a problem. Which Samsung phone did you get? One of the sliders or the new touch screen? Use the new phone, dial 611, this will connect you to straightalks support, tell them about the problem and let them talk you through the new phones setup. Hope this helps Fix Ya up.

I cannot delete voicemails without listening to them first, which costs me precious minutes. can i delete my old voicemails that i have never heard without using minutes? also, do i get charged when...

You can actually call your voice mail from a home phone and not use minutes. Any time you use your cell phone, whether someone calls you, or you call them, it counts as minutes to your plan. You should be able to see the actual voicemail number in your phone book, and be able to call it on a home phone and listen/delete them at your leisure that way. Your phone also rounds up on minutes. So if you talk to someone for 9 minutes and five seconds, it'll count as ten minutes to your plan.
