Not cooling enough. frozen from capillary tube up to 2 rows on evaporator. what is the problem here?

Frozen from the capillary tube to the top two rows of the evaporator is an indication of a refrigerant leak. Depending on the age (5 years or less) this repair is covered by the factory warranty. If older it must be done by an EPA Certified Technician. Make sure it is pressureized and properly tested for the leak. Do not let them use "Super-Seal" I personaly am aginst this product as nothing should be used except refrigerant, oil, and "Dry Charged Nitrogen" (used to build pressure).not cooling enough. frozen from capillary tube up - 7_31_2011_5_47_51_pm.jpg

    Sorry photo cut off what I was saying. If 5 years or less covered by warranty. Over 5, a Certified Technician is required just do not let them use "Super-Seal"

A copper thin tube from the unit is very hot. Is it normal?

Yes, well somewhat normal. The refrigerant leaves the compressor at high temperature and flows through the condenser coil where it cools about 20 degrees warmer than the outside air flowing through the condenser. Many small air conditioner units use a small copper tube (capillary tube) of a specific diameter and length for that system to cause a decrease in refrigerant pressure between the condenser and the evaporator. The refrigerant leaves the compressor as a gas at high pressure, cools in the condenser and changes into a liquid. The liquid flows through the cap tube and cools more as the pressure decreases and gets closer to the evaporator. The refrigerant boils and evaporates under the low pressure of the evaporator and turns back into a gas. That gas is pulled back to the compressor.
If the condenser is not cooling the refrigerant enough, the tube can become extra hot. Efficiency is reduced. Actual temperatures throughout the system depend on the type refrigerant used, suction and discharge pressure at the compressor, outside and inside temperature. Tables, charts and graphs for various pressure-temperature relationships can be found in refrigeration books and chemical web sites.

After 20 yrs of perfect operation, my hotpoint side-by-side is leaking water outside the unit in front. noting is defrosting.

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.


You have ice buildup on the bottom of your freezer. Two things will cause this:

1.) A frozen drain. This is common. You unit goes through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours for 20-30 minutes. Everything shuts down except for the lights. You defrost heater is turned on. If your drain is frozen the condensate has no where to go except for the bottom of the freeze.


2.) A restriction in your refrigerant seal system capillary tube or you have a refrigerant leak. If you have a block of ice build up in the upper right hand corner of you freezer evaporator (Cooling) coil, then you have a major problem. You are probably looking a $450.00 + repair.

You will have to remove the freezer back wall cover to determine which situation you have.

Hello! I need to know the size of the capillary tube because it was broken and now the refrigerator does not reach the freezing temperatures. thanks and please apologize me for my bad english

If the condenser is not throwing heat into the atmosphere you are not doing any cooling. The dessicant in a filter/dryer will only absorb maybe 10 drops of water. If you had water in the system, I would evacuate the refrigerant, and use a vacuum pump AND a hair dryer to heat up the components to get the water out., The water does not want to evaporate even in vacuum, and heat will help.
If you are throwing heat from the condenser, it is transferring heat and the evaporator should get cold. If it is not cold enough, then it is boiling too 'late', and may need to have some refrigerant removed.
Capillary tube length is custom for each application as it is the constriction that allows pressure buildup and boil and length affects the restriction capacity of the capillary.

Ac cooling insufficient

Sounds like not enough freon was put back in When you use a torch to heat the tubing a flake from the inside of the tube can travel to the capillary tubes in the evaporator plugging one or more of them. That would cause a very low suction pressure on the test gauges.

Where is it frosting, condenser or evaporator? If you mean frosting on evaporator line to compressor, probably iced up evaporator. If you mean frosting after condenser by capillary, unit short of gas/ blocked.

My 1hp window ac is frozen from capillary tube to 2 rows on evaporator but not giving enough cooling

First off check the filter and service it if needed. . then make sure the fresh air vent is closed on the unit.. No need to cool ouside iar at this time . Then turn the unit off and take a hair dryer to it . sometimes they ice up and you cannot see the ice. also units need to cycle or they will continue to add ice . so close off any rooms that are not needed, this will lessin the load on the unit and allow it to cycle . any thing below 72-74 is expensive .. Hope this helps let me know Jon

The capillary tubes are your metering device, without those, and the length of the tubes are determined by the design of the unit and tonnage.
On bigger units we use expansion valves to do the same job,

Ac capillary tubes

Sounds like you have a clogged cap tube. Yes they should both be sweating, I would expect your low side pressure to be lower though unless it is real hot in the camper. You can replace the tube but make sure what goes in is the same diameter and length because that is all engineered for proper metering into the evaporator.

Capillary tube replacement

The True TSSU-60-16 uses an oversized (134A) refrigeration system with air flow directed at the pans.... if the capillary tube is plugged it will NOT cool at all.. most of the time a restriction (plug) is at the drier where the capillary tube goes into it.. as it is smallest passage in the system...hope it helps
