Steam iron I have a Black & Decker steam iron. I use filtered water when filling it. Often while I'm ironing the water seems to leak out of the bottom plate and the ironing board pad is soaked. I have even been burned when lifting the iron and having hot water drip on my feet. Is it time for a new iron or is there a solution?

Before you go through the process of taking it apart, buy some clr or a similar lime and rust removal product and fill the iron with that, let it sit a while and then dump it out and fill it with water a few times. Often if tap water is used, internal deposits will form and block off the passages, same as what happens in your car radiator over time. Most steam irons work better if you use distilled water in them as there are no dissolved minerals in that. Most replacement parts cost nearly as much as the iron itself and it's generally not cost effective to repair them.

No need to dismantle the iron. Just fill it with a 50/50 white vinegar/distilled water solution and allow the iron to expel all of it as steam. Rinse with distilled water and allow to pass as steam. If you use distilled water from now on, you should no longer have staining problems. Hope this helps!

It's a possibility that you iron steam making elements are caked with lime and possibly the steam holes as well.

Purchase some "Lime Away" and dilute it 50/50 and pour it into your steam iron (drain all the old water out first and leave the iron unpluged) let sit for an hour or so and drain out, fill it again with clear water shake and drain out do this a couple of time then turn on the steam and see if it works properly, use the first time on an old towel to be sure all the chemical has been rinced out. Good Luck.

I cant figure out how to put the water INTO the iron

Looking at the front of the iron there is a spray nozzle and right above it there is a spot that opens to fill with water.

Iron Cleaning

If steam iron clogs from minerals in water, follow use-guide directions for cleaning, or use a commercial iron cleaner. A fine needle in the nozzle hole may open it again. Sometimes "steaming" will remove lint clogging the iron; fill with at least 1/4 cup water, set it to "steam", and hold in the air or set flat on wire rack over heat and moisture resistant surface like counter protective mat. Let steam until empty. Using only distilled water in steam irons helps avoid mineral buildup. Or if you have burned stains or darkness on the bottom you can Heat equal parts of vinegar and salt in small pan rub solution on cooled iron surface to remove dark or burned stains

Cleaning a self cleaning iron

Fill the Iron with water but keep the water level below the max line. Plug in the iron and set the temp to 6 and stand iron on it's heel and allow to heat for 3 mins. Now unplug the iron and take it to a sink move and Hold the variable steam dial in the CLEAN position. There may be some hissing and spitting while cleaning so be careful. Continue to hold the dial in the clean position until all the water has emptied. If necessary rock side to side and back to front to get all the water out. When finished release the steam dial plug in the iron and heat for about 2 mins to dry out the remaining water and unplug.
