Black rectangle in the middle of my screen

did you turn off the close caption settings in the set up menu.

U still have Closed Captioning functions are on.Check ur remote control for a button that said CC.Used that button pushes couples times for all CC1,2,3 to off.Should have no more black squares showing up the tv screen again.

Sounds like 'picture in picture' was turned on. And if there is no 2nd video source, it shows up as a black rectangle. Find a button that is labelled PIP or similar and press it, maybe several times. It may move the PIP around the screen before turning it off.

If it is a large black rectangle that blots out the middle of the screen then you need to check your CC (closed caption) setting. Make sure the closed caption is turned off. I'm not up to date on the newer sets, but a lot of the older ones had more than one CC setting. One setting ran the captioning across the bottom, another put it in a big black box in the center of the screen. Most places didn't support the full text so all that showed was a big black rectangle on the screen. Since I'm not sure exactly what your rectangle looks like, this is my best estimate of your problem. Hope this helps.

Either your tv or your directv receiver is on the text mode of the closed captioning function turn closed caption off and this will disappear.

Try turning off Closed Caption.

go into your menu and find closed caption, someone has accidently set the closed caption mode to text, when the on screen display of channel or volume goes away the box appears. turn off the closed caption feature or switch it to something other than "text" mode, and your box will go away.

Turn off the text box function of the closed caption decoder on the tv.
