The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.
These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the
picture to look normal. This is called convergence.
When its out of alignment the video will look
3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection
TV sets including Sony,

I have the same exact problem
the TV worked fine this morning and this afternoon, the BLUE is out of convergence and I have a blue arc from the top down and another from the bottom up and the convergence fixer on the remote is no help at all
Mine acted the same way, this afternoon the blue convergence went screwy. I tried to realign the blue using the advanced utility screen but no luck.
We've the same problem on color out of convergence. I could move the red horizontal line using the remote but not the vertical line on the righ side of the screen.

My ws 55511 has big red arc on top of the screen.
The red color is not lined up with the other two colors.It shift lower about 1 inch creating a ghost image.
Irish, is replacing the convergence IC difficult or expensive? We got a new board a few months ago - right before our warranty expired, so I need to decide whether to try and fix it myself, get it services, or start looking for another one. Thanks!

blue lens misaligned while watching tv. I can move the lens up and down but not left to right.
I have the same problem. I have had the convergence IC replaced twice since owning it. I purchased the TV in Sept 2003 and have had a repair person out 4 times for issues, twice for the IC. Now it's out of warrenty so I'm going to fix it myself. I checked this site for information on parts and the part listed in this solution was mislabled from the "complete part list" provided by this site.
The correct part number is: STK393-110
