I just blew half my afternoon, and have had to change the user name on my Palm (this is more painful than it sounds because many settings and favorites are lost in the process) by calling PalmOne tech support because of Hotsync errors. Their solution, of the slash-and-burn variety, not only trashed my user name but broke Verizon Wireless Sync, which they refused to help fix.
I observed errors of the form:

whenever I did a hotsync, after moving from a Treo 600 to a Treo 650, despite having uninstalled the old software and starting fresh with the disk that accompanied the new Treo.
Instead of Palm phone support's advice, which involved a hard reset, creating a new user, trashing all my Favorites and my user name, and spending the next hour on the phone with Verizon getting Wireless Sync working again, could I have diagnosted this some how?
The Verizon data support folks, (who can speak coherent English and have some actual debugging skills), suggested that I might have tried something called Windows Conduit Updater. Does that work with the Treo 650? If it does I'd consider trying now to see if I can salvage my old User.
Wireless sync does not work with msoutlook - switch to PDS sync if you want to do wireless sync and then do this:

What to do if you want to sync with Palm Desktop
The key to restoring HotSync functionality with Palm Desktop is to change the settings in the Verizon Wireless Sync application. Please note that you will only be able to sync when you're at your desk; Verizon's Wireless Sync does not include the ability to sync with Palm Desktop.
On your smartphone, launch Wireless Sync.
Press Menu.
From the Setup menu, select Connection Settings.
Advance settings.
Check the box for: enable other sync apps.
I had the same issue. So far the consensus is the wireless sync from Verizon. Once I did the hard reset and dumped my backup folder it works flawlessly. While the wireless sync seems like a great idea, I think it has problems.
BTW, Verizon couldn't help me at all and transferred me to Palm.

Hi, erieser,
If your new ( used) Z22 has a name "missy", then it is NOT A "BLANK", as you state! You need to do a complete "factory Reset" After the COMPLETE factory reset, you then start the Z22 and name it Absolutely identical to your computer's Z22 name, and then try again to connect. I am surprised that fixya.com did not direct you to my 32 other Z22 answers, which cover your question. You can read about your answer and other tips and maintenance procedures at http://kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html
users.dat is created in your named profile directory on the drive in the Palm folder. If it is missing, your computer can't sync properly to the device. Do a backup of your device using the palm desktop, this should recreate the file in your profile folder on the machine.
Hard resets on a 755p are described in the user's guide as removing the
battery (with the phone off, and screen off), and then pressing the
Navigator-UP button and holding until you insert the battery again, and
you see the Orangle PALM logo displayed, where you can release your
Nav-UP button. This does not work.
You need to hold down on the red power button, until the Orangle PLAM
logo shows up, release it, and you will see a question like "do you
want erase all of your data?" , press the Nav-UP button, and it will
now do a clean hard reset.
Now, on the backup folder.
If you do not change user-names, and your PALM Hotsync setting for
'Backup' is set to 'Desktop overwrites handheld' you will get
everything back when you HotSync. Therefore, if you delete the problem
App's from your Backup folder (ie C:\palm\755p\backup, where 755p =
your HotSync name) and you change to the settings on 'Backup' to
'Desktop overwrites Handheld' - then when you hotsync, you'll get the
app's you want back, and not the ones you do not.
type user name as "admin" and password as "admin" or blank or "password"
then go to wi fi advanced then check signal channel type 4 , 6, 11 are working fine try 1 by 1 theses channel then check. Set channel which give most high speed. When you set channel always save settings then restart computer and router both after save settings then check. Thanks for using fixya.
On your Palm Desktop, under username PalmUser40, select the category view of 'All'. Then press Control + A to select all contacts. Then press Control + C to copy them all.
Then change the username on the upper right to 'misty'. Then go to contacts, under category 'All', and then Control + P to paste all contacts.
This will most likely not keep all the category names, but all your contacts will be copied in.
Then hotsync to sync to your Palm TX.
Ok, do a hard reset in you pda, in your PC, using you palm d., open you user files, export your adresses and memos; then create a new user and import all this data and do a hotsync
Dear Toda ;]
Get an anti virus for palm os and run it, then reload the palm software.
another thing to try that worked on a different device is to rename the Back-up folder to Old-Back or some other name. Do a hotsync. This usually works.
Then open your old-back folder and install the programs and data to the handheld. Then do a final hot sync.
Hope this helps.
In order to remove the username from your Palm m505 you need to go into memo pad, create a new document, now the ticky part, you need to right in grafitti a cursive L (hand written low case l) followed by tapping on the screen twice (will produce one period), then the number 5. To test this you can follow the same procedure but change the number 5 to number 4. You should end up with Handheld does not have a usernameand all of your data will still be retained in your Palm. Now when you go to synhronize on your computer select the new user on your computer.
Hiya,
I manage to sync with both home and work, I upgraded to a Treo 650, and sync'd at home, then deleted my work user, and sync'd at work... and it's worked fine.
I'm able to add tasks, events, apps etc either at home or work, and they successfully sync with the other machine.
The only issue I've had is once or twice, my photos have doubled up, but that hasn't happened often.
