I recently bought this turntable used. I am trying to connect it to a Sony receiver with a phono input, but no sound comes out when connected. Does this turntable require a pre-amp or something?

  • Anonymous Jul 27, 2011

It's not Muted, and the Tape Monitor selection is switched to off.

As I mentioned, this receiver has worked with every component I've ever used on it, including turntables for years.

Could it be this Turntable is too powerful for the receiver or requires a separate mixer or preamp?

Phono input works with a different, cheaper turntable.

Turntable doesn't work in any of the other inputs.

If the unspecified Sony has a "PHONO" input you should be good to go. What model?

"PHONO" is the only designated connection on an audio device that is literal and exclusive. Nothing but PHONO will work right on it and old-school turntables would require it to preamplify and frequency-correct the tiny current produced by a Phono cartridge. Look up RIAA equalization.

If your unit doesn't have a PHONO connection AND your TT doesn't have a self-contained preamp you will have to get a Phono Preamp to connect between the TT and any Line Level input, like Aux.

It is the SONY STR-D1011S and it does have a PHONO input.

I used a cheaper turntable with it for years, and grounded it to this adjustable metal clasp on the back of the receiver. Not sure if there are built in pre-amps.

Even without a Phono preamp (which you DO have) you would hear something very low and tinny from a trurntable.

So does its FM work? Just want to prove that something basic works. You COULD have a higher-level basic problem like a and undesired tape monitor selection or it's Muted.

You clearly misunderstand the uniqueness of Phono sources. They are orders or magnitude WEAKER than Line Level sources.

Try it in another input to see what happens. Maybe your Phono section is shot. I'm thnking maybe the selector switch isn't making contact or something along those lines. Not being used for years tends to allow oxides to build up on contacts.

Well there ya go. Now you needd to troubleshoot the TT cartridge and wiring.

  • Anonymous Jul 28, 2011

How would I troubleshoot the cartridge and wiring? Never had to do that before.

  • Anonymous Jul 28, 2011

There are lots of resources online if you do a web search for "troubleshoot phono cartridge and wiring".

It doesn't make sense that BOTH channels would be dead as they are pretty much independent as most analog signals are.

No sounds coming from my Sony PS-LX250H

you will an amp . this unit is supposed to a preamp., making it line level.
The Sony PS-LX250H's built-in phono preamp allows you to use the turntable with any receiver, HTIB, or computer sound card by plugging the turntable's cables into any line-level input, such as auxiliary or VCR. If your receiver does have a dedicated phono input, we recommend using it instead of the turntable's internal phono preamp (which can be turned off). Chances are, the turntable will sound better that way.

Do you need a pre-amp to connect this turntable to a receiver that has no Phono input jack?

Yes, a TurnTable can be connected to any of the Analog Audio Input ports on the Sony STRDH130 Receiver. However, the turntable signal will need amplification from an external pre-amplifier (or an inline amplifier) as this Receiver does not have a PHONO input.

This sounds like a wiring problem. Perhaps a faulty earth connection inside the lead or the plugs to and from the turntable. Also check the connections to the cartridge, they can become loose or be connected wrong. Say a channel to the earth connection.

Hi, you need to connect the turntable to your amp via a phono input connection. If no phono input available then a pre amp needs to be used between turntable and amp to up the signal. Cheers John. [email protected]

I have a turntable...an Music Hall MMf5 that I bought for my husband. i dont know how to connect it up to speakers so that we can actually use it...can someone help???

If it has RCA jacks (white and red jacks) coming from the unit it needs to be connected to the inputs of a stereo amplifier of receiver to produce sound. Most AM/FM receivers have inputs for phono in back. Just plug the cords into the inputs for phono and put your selection knob on your stereo to the phono setting.

Technics turntable plays but no sound with Sherwood receiver

The problem is the fact that the new receiver has no phono input. The phono input has an extra stage of amplification built in. Your receiver is working fine. You need to purchase a phono pre-amp. These run around $20. Connect the turntable to the preamp and the presmp output to any line level input on your new receiver and everything will work as expected.

PS-T3 connection to Sherwood 4105 Receiver

You need a phono stage (phono amp) between the turntable and receiver to boost the lower signal from the turntable. If your receiver has phono inputs, use those as there will be a built-in phono stage.

SONY TURNTABLE PSLX22

You have to make sure your unit is connected to the PHONO INPUT connection on your receiver. If your receiver does not have a PHONO INPUT connection, then you will need to buy what's called a PHONO PRE-AMP - AVAILABLE HERE.

You connect the turntable to the Phono Pre-Amp, then you connect the Pre-Amp to the LINE IN or AUX IN of your receiver.

** sound

First and foremost, make sure you plug into directly to the PHONO input of your receiver. If your unit does not have a PHONO input, then you wont be able to hear much coming from the unit. The PHONO input is a pre-amplified input, and this turntable requires an amplified input in order to transmit it's signal correctly. Just using an AUX or LINE IN will not have enough power to increase the signal of the turntable. You have the option of purchasing a PHONO PRE-AMPLIFIER (range in price from US$15-30), or purchasing a new receiver with a PHONO INPUT!

If you have it connected to your phono input, and still no sound, your turntable may have either faulty RCA cables (red/white cables), or a bad tonearm - in either case will need to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Very low audio output

Make sure your receiver has a PHONO input. If you are connecting it to a LINE or AUX input, then there is not enough signal to boost the sound coming from the turntable. Turntables require a PHONO input, because phono input's have a pre-amp on them, which boost the turntable signal. If you do not have a PHONO input on your receiver, you will need to buy a Phono Pre-Amp.

If you have a phono input, then you might have an issue with the turntable's RCA cables, or your cartridge may be at fault.
