I am currently using Optimum and their Triple Play package with the WRT54G router, Firmware Version 4.21.1, and I get intermitent loss of internet and voice. I just had the Optimum tech here today to check out the problem and he stated it is a problem with the router. Sure enough, he had a tester and it showed errors while the router was connected. When the router was removed from the configuration and the PC was directly connected, the testing equipment showed no errors. Has anyone ever heard of the router causing errors in such a manner that it will intermitently shut down the modem for both voice and data?

Just had same problems with my brand new Xperia Mini Pro and old WRT54G ver 5. Every time I connected with WiFi the router restarted (once it returned to factory settings). I updated the router firmware to latest version (1.00.6 to 1.02.8) and after this it works fine.

Hi Friend,
As you need to upgrade the firmware for the router.
Please follow the below link that will take you to the router's drivers page.
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/APAC/en/support/WRT54G/download
Please select the appropriate version from the list of the versions and as soon as you will select the version on the left hand corner slightly below the version number you will find the "firmware for your router"
Please let me know if it was of some help?
Thank you.
NOTE: Before proceeding with the upgrade, your computer must have an active Internet connection. It is also recommended that you use a wired computer in upgrading the router's firmware.
You have WRT54G router. check the version number of the router. If it is 5,6 or 8 then upgrade the firmware of the router. You will find the version number on the Flip side of the router. when you turn it upside down, you will see the model number and just after the model number , you will see the version number. Once you upgrade the firmware of the router, reset the router and reconfigure the router . Click here for step by step instructions
Look carefully at the label and the firmware installed in your router. The 1.02.5 is listed for 5 and 6 only and version 8 is for 8 only. There is no 7 listed, so it was either a special run or there is just no firmware upgrade for it yet. It must have been perfect :-)
What is between the router and the location that will not allow you to connect? Is there anything electrical or is there concrete, etc.
Here a couple of ideas:
A) Move the router to a high spot in the current room B) Create a reflector screen to help direct the signal to where you need it. You can find the how to instructions on line and it's free to try. C) Check with Linksys to be sure you have the latest firmware version installed. D) Change the firmware in your router to an open source version like tomato. Their version will allow you to increase the signal output. Be sure to back up your current firmware before you do this.
Be careful if you try step C. If you mess it up it can be a pain to recover from.
Chances are yes depending on the version that you have. This model has been in production for some time and variations has necessitated different Versions (mostly on the firmware).
The LinkSys page for various downloads (including latest firmware) is here. Again, you need to specify what version is your WRT54G.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
