You have a miss fire under load the most common cause is a bad spak plug wire, if you give it a good old tune up it should take care of the problem.

spark plugs, spark plug wires, distabutor cap and rotor, air filter, fuel filter, and PCV valve.....good luck

Testimonial: "Those are all good responses, but I've tried all of them! Thanks."

What to do with sputtering and lack of acceleration

Good luck!

Why does my 1998 sebring idle fine but sputter badly under load.

Does it use spark plug wires or individual ignition coils for the each plug?. My 98 intrepid uses coils and occasionally I have to change them out cause it would start to miss when normal temperature was achieved. If it uses wires, try replacing them, along with the spark plugs.

If I accelerate smoothly, no problem. If I need to...

something electrical, ignition control module, coil, or ecu check the ICM and coil first, as they are the least expensive, and the most likely culprits. auto zone checks them as long as they are removed first.

My check engine light comes on and my car will not accelerate fast and acts like it wants to cut off and sputters. This lasts for a couple of times I start the engine and than goes away and than comes back...

This sounds like a problem with the throttle position sensor. Take the car to an autoparts store and have them scan the computer for fault codes stored. Most parts stores will do the scan for free. Getting the codes will narrow down the cause of the problem and should eliminate the need for speculation. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.
