I Just bought a brand new Fender Hot Rod Deville 2x12. I get no sound when i turn it on. I can hear the hum of the speaker, everything lite up, including the two 6L6 tubes. When i plug into the jack, i cant get that sound of pluggin the cable into a jack. Whats going on? Thank you

Yes, though you'll have to wire them directly to the new head, not running itno the Frontman amp itself.

On mine, the guitar input jacks get tarnished and causes all kind of interference and noise. Take a Q-Tip soaked with WD-40, run in down into the jack and brush up and down. Don't overlook the filter caps as they are a common cause of noise. You need a capacitor checker (the older tube type) to thourghly check those out.

Unless the person that analyzed this problem used an oscilloscope and did detailed troubleshooting, I would NOT jump to the conclusion that aan op amp was blown BASED upon my looking at the schematic of the unit. There are MANY components involved with the overdrive channel, including relays and other transistors and components. The most probable caause would be that 1/2 of the V2 vacuum tube is burnt out. Test by swapping V1 with V2. If NOTHING works, then replace the tube that is NOW in V1 as the second section of it has a burnt out heater. Also a bad potentiometer for the OD channel would be a suspect. A VERY common problem is broken solder at pot terminals. Try plugging a set of headphones into the preamp output. See if you can hear sounds in bothe OD and clean channels. Note you will only hear sound in the LEFT headphone as the preamp out is MONO. MOST of the three op amp chips would NOT kill the OD signal if they were bad.

Hi. If the volume and drive levels are considerably low but you still hear a noise, you may want to consider trying a different guitar cable. The noise may be coming from a ground loop which is being amplified and overdriven by the amp itseld. I hope this helps. :-)

For the Drive channel you need to use the Drive control AND the MASTER volume control. When the Drive channel is active, the Channel Indicator lamp should be RED indicating the Drive Channel is active. The Drive control knob is used to adjust the preamp volume and distortion level of the Drive Channel. This gives you a clue as to what to check if adjusting the controls doesn't work -- the preamp tubes. Having said that, ONLY try to check these tubes with the amp OFF! Never stick your hand up into the chassis of a live amp. It could be lethal. Your preamp tubes are the ones farthest from where the power cord enters the chassis. They have a rubber like stabilizer on them. They have a tendency to wiggle loose, which is part of the reason for the stabilizer. Again, if you're not familiar with the insides...stay out and get an amp tech to help you.

The Normal Channel only uses the Volume Control to adjust volume.

I have answered some of this before, however I have reveiwed the schematic and as an electrical engineer I want you to do a couple tests.

First, plug in a set of headphones into the preamp out jack. Note that due to the impedance mismatch what you hear will not be very loud. Now change the state of the clean OD. Did you hear a faint pop?

Next plug a LOW impedance device OR even an instrument cable into the power amp "input" jack. Do this with the power off then warm amp up.
Now, change the state of the clean OD. Did you hear a faint pop?

Now for the analysis. If you did hear one in the first test and NOT in the second, the pop you are hearing is the "NATURE OF THE BEAST".

I can tell you from the design that the pop you hear is from coupling within the clean and OD relays within the unit. There is no cure for this within the unit other than find another brand...

I would recommend that you use an EXTERNAL pedal for the effects you want rather than trying to use the clean OD in this amp. I suspect it was never intended to be shifted during playing as I can guarantee it will pop when you shift while having anything other than dead silence (not even a bit of hum from your guitar). There is also statistical noise in the preamp that the laws of physics will not let us get around that may be enough to create a bit of a pop.

You could also use a volume pedal between the preamp output and the power amp in to throttle the volume to zero before shifting to OD.

In general I think you will find that what you are hearing is the nature of this beast.

It sounds like a filter capacitor(s) has failed. The electrolytic caps dry out and cease to perform allowing unfiltered power to reach the preamp sections and get amplified.

Being this is tube with high voltages, an experienced person should work on it due to shock danger.

I assume you checked the tubes for shorts as well as emission since a heater to cathode short could cause this as well.

Then troubleshoot the reverb section .

If the footswitch is not switching correctly, open it up and check for any shorts or a defective switch. Sounds like it's a problem with the switch.

This may sound stupid, but did you check the fuse?
