I took a quick look but didn't find a way to open it manually. It does give ordering information for a replacement battery/charger. You might also be able to find third-party replacements.
you don't convert the files, you just downlod them via a firewire comnnection.
If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder....
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to
download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so
you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except
possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did
not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your
camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading
stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
Open your editing program and choose the capture mode.
The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection....
There are no driver or software available for your camcorder but there is a way to connect the camcorder to your PC and access the data. Click on the link below to find out about Firewire and order it to make your camcorder work. Click here

Sony's website says: "Some digital
camcorders must be setup to output a signal through the i.LINK® port
prior to being connected to a computer. Consult the instruction manual
of your camcorder for specific information before continuing with the
steps in this solution. Instruction manuals are available in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
Ensure the i.LINK cable is connected securely to the camcorder and computer.
Ensure the camcorder is turned on and being powered by the supplied AC power adapter.
Ensure the video capture card and software are configured properly to receive the i.LINK signal from the camcorder.
NOTES:
Depending
on the video capture card and software you are using, you may need to
manually configure the capture card and software to receive a signal
from the i.LINK port. If applicable, check the Help files of the software or contact the video capture card or software manufacturer for further information.
Sony®
digital camcorders are not provided with and do not require special
device drivers for i.LINK connectivity. The device drivers that allow
i.LINK connectivity should be provided with the video capture software.
If the software you are using does not appear to have the required
drivers, you will need to contact the software manufacturer.
Likely this is the case where the camcorder needs to be setup in order to connect to the Firewire port. This is done inside the menus. Windows XP and Windows Vista will detect a camcorder connected to a Firewire port automatically. Make sure your camcorder is powered up and configured before connecting it. Does your PC have a Firewire port? Many do not, PCI cards with firewire ports can be bought online or from local retailers. Some sound cards come equipped with one.
