Probably not in tension correctly, always thread the top with the pressure foot raised so that the thread seats correctly into the tension device. Turn it back to 5 and try again, you shouldn't need to turn tension up to 8. It is more likely that the tension device is dirty and needs cleaning.

To clean your tension device, turn it to zero, then floss between the discs with the selvage edge of a clean piece of cotton fabric, if you get black gunk out, then keep cleaning. You can wet the fabric edge with denatured alcohol too, just don't get onto plastic bits. Thread, especially cheap quality, will shed dye particles and thread fibres, which will build up in the tension device with time, impairing how it works. So it is always important to read your machine manual and clean and oil it as the manual shows, at least every 3 months, or each time you get the machine out to use it. This prolongs its life.
