Those are beep codes. Going to need to figure out what kind of motherboard it is, and look it up here: http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm

The sound of hardware failure is too happy, imo.

I have compaq 530 tower which when I switch on gives 5 short beeps, I have checked the connections as advised and they seem ok, looking on net it says 5 short beeps could be prob with CPU, what is CPU.

5 Short Beeps
Your motherboard is complaining. Try re-seating the memory and rebooting. If that doesn't help, you should consider another motherboard. You could probably get away with just replacing the CPU, but that's not too cost-effective. Its just time to upgrade!

Powers on for 5-6seconds then beeps one time and shuts down

Here are the beep codes for common BIOS programs:

1 BeepA single beep from an AMI based BIOS means there has been a memory refresh timer error. The solution is often to replace the RAM in the computer.

A long beep from AWARD is probably memory error.

1 short beep from AWARD bios & PhoenixBIOS and most others is a positive ok signal.

Without more information, it sounds like it is a memory problem. Remove the memory and see if it will boot to the BIOS/setup screen. If so and you have multiple memory sticks, put one in and try to boot. If that fails try the other.

My computer doesn't load on the screen as I turn it in

A solid amber power LED on a Dell System is indicative of a no post. There are 4 diagnostics LEDs on most Dell Towers (Either on the back marked ABCD, or on the front marked 1234) they can give more details of what the POST problem is.
Troubleshooting: Disconnect all external connections to tower except power, turn it on, see if the LED indications changed. If they change, then connect disconnected items one at a time till the failed item is found. If no change, the open tower, remove all PCI expansion cards, see if system will boot. If still no change, then most likely a motherboard failure. Take RAM out, see if you get a Beep error code when powered on, if no beeps, replace motherboard. If it does beep, try RAM modules one at a time, if it boots with 1 but not the other, replace the effected module. If no boot, with either replace MB
