in which there are data recovery tools that can help, or your drive was formatted on a different os that your machine and is not recognizable. Windows always offers to format a usb when it dosnt recognize the formatting. Just skip that part and run the data recovery tool. Keep in mind, although usb drives are handy, with all flash technology, there's little notice if any , when the drive begins to fail. So always keep a cloned usb stick or alternate data storage when using flash.
When you say try to convert, you mean reformat from fat32 to NTFS? Depending on the size you may not be able to write it as a NTFS. Also, if you have anything on it you want to save, you need a raw recovery tool Squidoo has a good one.
However, if it won't let you format to anything and keeps reverting to raw, most likley your drive is damaged beyond normal repair.
Clicking Hard drive When a hard disk makes a clicking sound and the computer does not detect it then the hard disk is faulty. This is commonly known as "The click of death". There is no way of fixing this hard drive, if you need to recover your data, then there are companies that can recover data off faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Goto the companies website search for downloads for your product however external HDDs are extremely easy to use , there is a power cord a Data cord (USB) and like I said in my last post backing up your data manually is always better than letting your device back up data for you , it will keep worthless data , when doing a revamp which is a total reinstall of the OS ( fresh copy ) there are only two folders you need to keep 1. your documents ( music, photos, movies etc. ) and your executibles ( your programs ) I have about 50 Exes starting from Adobe to Xfire , so letting auto backup is a no-no
If you are having only one drive, means the drive contain OS and data . it wil loose. If you are having separate drive for data and OS and format only C drive . then data will be secure. Better keep keep at least two drive and one is for OS and another one is for data.. Hope you will succeed
How big are your movie files in MB, and are you using your USB 2.0 to upload or USB 1? Keep in mind USB 2.0 is a little over twice the speed of data transfer, and how long is long? 4 minutes, 2 hrs...? Based on your specs, it shouldn't be more than a few minutes. Check your Task Manager for CPU or Memory hungry processes while transferring.
