I have an Onkyo Amp M-5140 and the Protection light kicked on is there a way to reset this? How do I fix it? the fuse on the inside is fine. I have unplugged it for 24 hours and plugged it back in and the protection light still comes on. Please help!!!

This is either you have something loose as in a connection at the back, or the output transistors/IC are open circuit.

Likely you blew your outputs Transistors or mos fets, you cannot be sure without ohm meter. usually when one side goes out the protection kick in on both chanels

if a fuse blow there is a big chance that another fuse on the main circuit is blown also it should be on the protection unit.

Hey there..Sorry.When the amps are over powered they blow the main circuit and short causing the amp to turn on the right back off to protect mode.That you will have to send in to get fix..Look behind the amp and see if theres any wires touching or grounding out.My favorite amps are from onkyo and believe me i've done this a few times to 5 aps I've had.So I up graded to the tx sr 906 It rocks and will blow every speaker I have before the amp will go..Hope this helps you and good luck..Have a great day...

Fine audio equipment from Japanese manufacturer's like Onkyo is typically "stand-alone", meaning there often is no universal remote control available that will work a given unit; those that will work are rarely capable of accessing all the features & functions such units employ...best bet is an original equipment remote control; recommend you try going to this site:

There is some way to change a protection (fuse?). No. The fuse usually was not broken. How long did your amp turn on?
3 seconds (DC protect) OR immediately shut down (Over Current protect)? How to confirm?
1.Unplug the amp.
2.Remove the metal cover.
3.You will see a long vertically installed pre-amp board mounted next to those large power transistors fixed by 12 screws on a large aluminium heat sink.
4.Remove this long vertically installed board mounted by 2 screws.
5.With 2 screws removed, just pulling this board out and hold it with one hand.
6.Plug the amp and switch it on.
7.If your amp stays ON forever, the problem is from this long board.
8.If switch off at once, the problem is from power amp board.
Try the above- mentioned steps. I will tell you what to do next. Just search you tube for SR600 cap replacement. I have written an email here. Write an email to me if you want to fix this amp.

1-disconnect subwoofer first and test-and then disconnect surround speakers-and front speaker after-and later center speaker.ever time you disconnect you check the operation until you find the bad one(or two)which make the problem change its cable first and then change speaker itself.if all above failed contact the service center.

Make shure your speaker wiring is solid hookup to amp and spekers (NO CROSSED WIRING). Also make shure speakers are not wired in parallel or the speaker impeadance will be to low and amp will kick out.Turn speakers off then hook up headphones and crank up volume then see if amp kicks out.If it does you have an internal overload and needs serviced. If it playes ok then you must have speaker problems or wiring.

All speakers and lines OK?  Sorry for basic approach!!  Protection is supposed to work when speaker outputs are loaded under recommended Z. speaker Z is a setting too ... along with several other paramenters.  Also, re the "last return" ...  Maybe the back surround speakers were turned off in settings?  Again, apologies if you've tried all this basic stuff.  I've just bought one of these amps and have probs with the FM tuner not tuning anything.  Mmmm. Back to the shop??   Cheers, Chris

no, your output transistors maybe 2 of them are gone or the small power supply that feeds the other circuitry has become defective.
