You get this when you completely reset the phone. Please contact Verizon and after they activate/program the phone, this message will be gone.

Well, assuming that you use Verizon...

Your phone should have come with a "Stop! Read This First" sheet. Mine was yellow.

Basically, you charge the battery, then dial *228
Follow the prompts.

If you use another service provider...
Call your service provider!

when the screen says inital programing needed or w/e you can still dial. only when that screen is up though. Do not press okay, try to get that screen back, itss not that had, but you can only dial when that screen is up, just dial the number your paper tells you to

SOURCE: "initial programming needed" problem

I can not guarantee this Punksk8er but, i did the same thing with my phone by switching the battery with my mother's and I ended up with the initial programming needed sign. This is how i fixed it...

Go to...
>Menu
Select the option...
>Settings
Scroll down to...
>Phone Settings
Then Select the option...
>NAM selections
There you will see the options
>NAM1 &NAM2

Mine was on NAM2 and i switched it to NAM1.
The system restarted and the error "initial Programing needed" went away.

I am no phone expert or anything so I don't really understand how it works but i hope this helps you out dude.
