Hi Just wondering if you could tell me some troubleshooting ideas for an Amana air conditioner--it seems to be getting power--we are hearing a noise coming from the unit indicating that it is getting power but the three blades are not rotating. Thanks

Every air conditioner has a motor called a compressor. The compressor provides the cooling capacity for the air conditioner. If the compressor or its electrical controls are defective the compressor may try to start, fail, and create an electrical overload. If the unit does create an overload, every compressor circuit is also equipped with an overload safety switch. The safety switch is designed to protect the compressor from burning out. The safety switch will cut the power to the compressor for a certain length of time and then reset itself. When it resets it will allow the electricity to flow to the compressor once again. If the compressor then starts, the unit should function normally. If the compressor doesn't start when the overload resets, the overload will again cut the electricity to the compressor. This cycle will continue indefinitely. (Always allow three to five minutes before restarting the compressor.) If this situation is occurring, unplug the air conditioner and get help from a qualified repair technician. This problem is often fatal to the air conditioner because the cost of repair often exceeds the price of a new air conditioner.

To start a compressor you need a start contactor - relay and a capacitor. The click you hear could be from the contactor, which could be normal OR could mean that the contacts are not staying closed which would not allow the compressor to start.

I have an amana ptac model pth153B50AM it does not seem to cool much at all but I do hear the compressor come on.Before i cost myself a couple thousand dollars can anyone tell me is this fixable?

yes it is fixable does the blower run? I would pull it out take it outside and wash with hose the outside coil and inside coil make sure you clean the outside coil real good on both sides. this may solve your problem.

So far, you've pretty much done the right things in troubleshooting the unit itself. Now, turn your attention to the receptacle that it's plugged into. Is there power in the outlet? Is the interior of the receptacle damaged (loose wire)? Has a circuit breaker been tripped?

Sometimes the problem is not in the unit. It can be the outlet or circuit feeding the receptacle.

Amana Cooling Condensing Unit fan stops spinning after 15 mins

Capacitor, dirty condencer coil causing the motor amps to run too high. But most likely worn bearing on blade side of motor causing it to pull to one side causing it to over heat and shut down. Sleve bearings should have no side play.
