Only the audio is recording, NO VIDEO, onto the hard drive. The JVC reads, "Lens Cap" even when the lens cap has been removed. Flip out screen is black. Only shows record settings; Battery life, Time and others. When in still camera mode, pressing the REC/SNAP button results in the sound of an image being captured, but no image on screen. When in video camera mode, pressing the REC/SNAP button results in audio recording but no image recording. All other functions appear to be working normally.

This is usually caused by a defective CCD image sensor and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

This is a known fault, JVC recalled a lot of these camcorders in 2007. They were manufactured with defective components. Contact JVC customer Services and demand a replacement.

Display is black even after removing the lens cap

See my post of before. I just knocked the camera on the floor by mistake and it miraculously started working again after years. Shows it must be mechanical and not related to software.

Dropped camcorder

When you dropped the camera you ended up jamming the iris closed. There may be additional damage within the lens assembly. In order to repair the stuck iris, the optical lens assembly needs to be partially disassembled. This is not a project for the novice. This should be taken to a JVC authorized service center for a repair estimate. The estimate will cost about $50 or so.

JVC Digital Video Camera GR-DVL107E

Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.

Lens cap

Apparently this same problem exists on many different models. I have a JVC grd72u. I called JVC @ 800-252-5722. I selected the "Corrective Action Program" prompt from the automated attendent. I spoke to a customer service rep. They are aware of the problem and are fixing it for free, but only until 12/31/07. I suggest you call ASAP and get your name in the computer. If the problem is something besides the CCD sensor, they will call you with the estimate to repair.
