You do have the kill switch in the "run" position, don't you?

The switch suppose to ground the coil for the spark plugs, try to remove the kill switch and verify the continuity of the switch contacts.

...... and when you put the kill switch into the run position, did things return to normal?

On most of the ones I've seen the kill switch just grounds out the spark, killing the engine. Make sure that for some reason the kill switch isant remaining grounded out.

I guess you tried reversing the kill switch. But did you try it after you put the ignition on? Some switches work this way. Try different things. ignition on, ignition off, etc

No it's not normal. According to your description, you may have a grounding kill switch. It's not common, but may be so. Disconnect the switch completely (underneath the plastics) and see if this helps, our replace it. It may be something else, just perceived as a coincidental switch problem

My name is Dennis and I would like to help but what I think may be a problem, has to be confirmed visually, so I can only give you a guess where I'm going with this. The kill switch is a ground wire for the ignition so the magneto current will not jump the gap at the plug. If the ground wire is disconnected from the kill switch the ignition will not be grounded out then you request it to be grounded. Now if this wire that is disconnected is entangled with the rod that connects the throttle to the carburetor that could be the reasonthe machine is a run-away. Look at the linkages in the area ofthe kill switch and see if this makes sense.
