Main cause could be something stuck in the lighter socket. Sometimes, the ends of the car charger for a cell phone of GPS will separate, leaving the end in the socket itself. Placing the cigarette lighter back int he socket while there's something already in the socket will cause you to blow a fuse.

I have replaced the #17 fuse (20 amp) numerous times and the cig. lighter twice

Try disconnecting the cigar lighter altogether to see if the fuse continues to blow. If it keeps blowing, you have a short somewhere in the wiring, if not the lighter is causing the problems.

Toyota Corolla seca1998 radio/cig not working, replaced fuse for cig and it has worked but for no more than a minute or 2, keeps blowing. Assuming it's something to do with a shortage between the cig fuse...

hi there. ok what I advise is to simply disconnect the cig lighter, then replace fuse and turn on stereo. this will tell you which is causing the problem. if fuse blows its the stereo if fuse is good then its the cig lighter. you may have had a child etc put coins in the slot thinking it a slot machine...ive been there before but sadly it was only pennies....they rattle around in the stereo and hit electrical parts. also look into the cig lighter hole and see if a coin or similar stuck down there bridging the sides with the bottom... simply use your finger to check this and not a screwdriver to short it again.

hope this helps you.

Cigarette lighter blowing fuses

some cig lighter outlets have a U shaped + center pin.
Sometime yer plug's - will engage it. ooops . Look for the two sides of the U and mark the edge of the outlet with red nail polish. Then when inserting the plug with a side pin, orient it away from the paint. Keep more fuses in the glove box

Hi,i'm having trouble with the cig lighter on my car, it keeps blowing fuses. can i wire it directly to the battery with an inline fuse? How would i do this?

you could do this by running 2 wires directly from the battery to the back of the cig lighter and by fusing the positive.if it is only when using the cig lighter and not when charging a phone ect.it could be element on the cig lighter shorting
