Question about Dehumidifiers

1 Answer

One, no manual for Classic ECD40E made by Woods. Two, recieved from a friend, someone tried to fix, need wiring diagram to make sure wires are in correct postion. Reason: Compressor turns on for a few minutes then shuts off. Stat set on max and fan on high. Wondering if neutral and hot wires changed on relay on compressor?

SOURCE: Whirlpool 50 pint dehumidifier

the problem just might be that your are trying to use this unit at a time of season that is cold weather. there is no humidity in the air so the unit is cycling on and off .there by the noise you hear. dehums work best when the temp is 65 degrees or higher and the humidity level is 60% or higher. and that means outside. in order to have humidity the water has to be heated up to the point that it starts to evaporate.

SOURCE: DH30 Dehumidifier Compressor Does not Operate

I just picked one up at a tag sale, seller said it worked sometimes. Seems to have the same problem as yours. I took the time to tweak all of the connections and then re-soldered the control board with no luck. I finally disconnected the humidity control and it worked fine. By disconnecting the humidity control the unit defaults to it's highest setting and you have to unplug the unit to turn it off. Conclusion so far is that the humidity control rheostat is bad.
Note: Now while running the fan runs continuously and the compressor cycles on and off every 10 to 15 minutes. This may to be normal since the unit appears to be doing its job and I'm not sure how it is supposed to run since a purchased it broken.

SOURCE: compressor runs, overheats and shuts down..fan does not run...

I have had the same problem. Following the advice of someone on these pages I opened the machine up and checked the fan with a meter. On my model (the 404) it has two settings so two leads; one seemed okay, the other was dead. I checked the circuit where the fan connector plugs in and I got that both speed settings were supplying plenty of juice. Apparently the fan motor is dead. A replacement runs $79 at http://www.appliancefactoryparts.com/. I ordered one; we'll see what happens.

SOURCE: Fan runs, all controls work compressor does not run.

It sounds as if the unit has lost it's refrigerant charge. Take to small appliance repair for confirmation, but it probably leaked out.

SOURCE: Humidifier compressor does not stay on more than 1-2 minutes

Sounds like bad relay on compressor or bad compressor. There is only so far you can go yourself without knowledge in electrical and AC units. Suggest you call a service tech or if you can take it to service cemter near you. Russ

The bearing in the fan is shot. where can I get a new fan?

Find someone who sells this make for a direct replacement. Otherwise ww grainger and many other hvac repair companys with carry a replacement. Get the hp,voltage, amps and direction it turns. measure it to make sure it fits and mounts the same. Also some replacement motors has 2 wires for the capacitor so get new one and don't try to wire it to old capacitor. Most are duel porpose on new units and will run fan and compressor. Some new motors have the option to us only one brown wire for duel cap but make sure you use the correct brown wire one is solid and one with have a white stripe if it will work both ways. Also make sure Cap MFD matches new motor.

Location of Maytag M7DH45B2A motor fuse

I'm fixing one of these too. Take the top off (follow the AC cord) and the fuse is on the PCB.

I am also looking for a better wiring diagram - the control panel on mine does not light up.

NO POWER TO MY DEHUMIDIFIER

I took my dehumidifier apart and I found why the unit no longer would start.

First, there is a fuse inside the metal compartment that houses the control circuit board.
However, the fuse was not blown. Instead I found the relay that controls the compressor,
(circuit diagram calls it RY-COMP) was not functioning and was left in the open position.
The relay must switch the compressor on/off based on humidity, full water hopper, and
maybe other factors like temperature.

The RY-COMP is a large black plastic component on the circuit board with two
wires (blue and black) connected at the top. I tested the contacts and they remained
open when starting up the dehumidifier. Doing a small bit of rewiring so that the blue and black wire
were connected and also wired to RY-COMP terminal 3, the dehumidifier came back to life.
However, this is good for proving what broke but without an electronic control to cycle the
unit on and off and to halt when the water hopper is full it's not a valuable alternative and
it risks a burnout of the compressor from constant use.

I think the RY-COMP relay is a solid state relay which could have gone bad from a spike
in voltage when plugging the unit in or cycling on/off.

I certainly don't want to buy another unit where the circuitry is not robust enough to survive
plugging in every couple weeks. I was thinking I could try replacing the relay with a magnet relay which would probably survive spikes much better.

DeLonghi 50 Pint dehumidifier DE 500P won't turn back on

If it is not responding when you try to activate the shutoff button and are still not recieving an acknowledgement that the bucket is full you may hav a defective shutoff button. Try contacting the Manufacturer and see if you can purchase just the button. This i a common part and the price is usually reasonable. If you feel very technical inclined you can remove the button and touch the 2 wires together simulating a closed contact. The dehumidifier should now acknowledge the bucket is full. If you recieve the notification then the button is bad. If you found this solution helpful please rate it.

Thanks - Tech101
