Memory Stick for Sony Digital Camera DSC-S50

I'm looking at buying another memory stick for my camera. I'm confused at the phrase "your camera does not support the MagicGate standards...your camera is not subject to MagicGate copyright protection" in my owner's manual. Does that mean I can't use the Sony MSA-128A as a replacement? Should I buy the SanDisk SDMSV-128-A10 instead? Thank you for any help.

Hi, I'm going to add this, and I'm not sure how to word it. Magic Gate, Magic Pro those terms signal to me that the device is limited accessing only 128 Mb at a time. You have seen the memory sticks advertised as 256 Mb, and they are 2 X 128 Mb with a physical switch that must be turned to access the other 128 Mb of memory. Those devices that are Magic Gate and Magic Pro compatible allow all the memory to be accessed at one time. Hope that helps.

I have a Sony digital camera model # DSC S75. I would like the largest memory stick available for still photos. I get confused with GM and MB. I found one for 32 GB, is that the lrgest and about how much...

I did a bit of research on this, and you're going to have to be very careful. Your camera is only compatible with the very first generation of "memory stick". That sounds like a generic term, but it's actually a Sony specification. Please take a look at the wikipedia page on memory stick, and note all the newer versions. Also note that the 'memory stick' is no longer manufactured. Here is a list of memory sizes, I agree that the Mb and Gb are confusing. Each one is double the size of the one before.

8 Mb
16 Mb
32 Mb
64 Mb
128 Mb
256 Mb
512 Mb
1 Gb
2 Gb
4 Gb
8 Gb
16 Gb
32 Gb
64 Gb

Now, you will have to find a genuine Sony "memory stick" and not the Pro, or Duo, or anything like that. When they were manufactured, the largest one was 128 Mb, so that is the limit for your camera. Anything in "Gb" or Gigabytes cannot be a memory stick. I did find 128Mb memory sticks on Amazon. The review page on DPreview will tell you how many pictures you can store on a card half the size, just double it.

Why does my DSC-P31 Camera won't accept Sony memory MSAC-M2?? and what are the list of memory stick that compatible to DSC-P31?? thanks

It is an old camera. It was introduced in 2002. The spec's I looked up just say memory stick, and memory included "8MB Memory Stick". I looked the MSAC-M2 up on line and it looks a like it's a "Memory Stick Duo Adapter" not a memory stick. I'd try one that is sold as a "Memory Stick".

Hi, What is the maximum memory stick size that will work with this camera? Thanks,Tony

Hi Tony,

I found several sites that sell memory for this camera, all stated 128 MB is maximum. One such site is linked below.

Memory stick error

Try searching through the menu options on the camera with the card in, and look for the "format memory card" option. This may help. Also you can try to use your computer to format the card as well. Hope this helped.

Sony digital dsc-f707 startup goes to "no memory stick"

Could be that the contacts on the camera are oxidised. Try cleaning the contacts with isopropyl alcohol and see if this helps. If not, it could indicate a circuitry problem. In this case, you'd probably be better off buying a new cam altogether!

Check with the tech support people for your camera for any compatibility issues with the model type of memory stick. Some of these digital cameras have an issue with this.

Memory Stick error c:13:01

The problem is compatibility - or lack thereof. The older Sony cameras such as DSC-S50 (I have one), which used the original version of the Sony Memory Stick, can't read the new Memory Stick Pro - even with the "Duo" adapter.

I don't know all the specifics but it has to do with how the memory chip interfaces w/ the camera, how the data is transferred -- newer models of chips/cameras use a different, faster method for data transfer which the older cameras/devices can't do. Similar to "serial" vs. "USB" vs. "USB-2" issues with older computers.

So, sorry to say, but if you have a DSC-S50 camera like I do or similar older model, you're stuck w/ the standard Memory Sticks - which I have just discovered are very hard to find any more. I just finished a sweep of all major electronic stores/outlets in my area (silicon valley - where there's plenty of them), plus many web sites. And all you can find new, now, are the Pro/Duo chips, 1GB & up.

Anyway I hope this helps!

Memory sticks

The memory stick for this camera can be brought at any Sony Style, Sonystyle.com or even your local best buy. You will need to look for Sony Memory Stick Pro. They are now not purple now but black like the new smaller Pro Duo.

If you wish to call and order you can do so at 1-877-865-7669 and speak to a customer sales rep and order it over the phone.
