Blank Screen problem!

Yes, more likely it's the harddrive making the clicking sound trying to boot.

Simply restart your computer.

Press F8 before the OS loads.

Then select "Last Known Good Configuration" from the startup options.

open up my computer
right click on c drive
go to properties
go to tools tab
click check now
restart laptop and scandisk will run

It is likely that the hard drive is bad or a memory issue. I would start by removing the hard drive and see if it goes past the compaq screen. If it does then you know what is wrong. If not message me and will walk you through the next step

Same thing happened to mine. I took it to a tech to fix it.

Your RAM maybe bad, or too low or just don't have any. Had the same problem with a IBM ThinkPad R31 and all I did was added a 512MB RAM Chip in it and screen came on and loaded to bios.

It may be the problem with driver. Your OS may not contain the proper driver.Like in windows service pack 1 do not recognise some camcorders. either upgarde to service pack 2 or download proper driver from manufacturers site

Since u said that ur screen flashed and also u said that when u connected an external VGA nothing would display so from these two i can tell you that it is a hardware problem and that too with the VGA card/display card.

There are only three issues it could be...

1. The ATI video card has become warped due to overheating which woulod need to be replaced. You can find them used on Ebay for around $65 or new for around $125.

2. The cable has become frayed that connectects the video card to the inverter board due to opening/closing the laptop. Like $7 on Ebay.

3. The ribbon cable connection to the LCD panel itself has started to come undone which is also a common problem. Around $125 on Ebay.

You can try pressing down above the F5 key to see if the screen will come back up.
