Defrost carefully with a hairdryer taking care not to blow hot air on thermostats mounted on the pipework. this can take some time and don't use a knife to scrape ice off - use a plastic or wood spatula. appliance will still work for some time - week or two
to identify the fault is more difficult and you will need a multimeter. check continuity thro the defrost heater and the thermal fuse in series with the heater. check continuity thro any thermostats mounted on the pipework.. if these are all ok, then it points to a fault with the timer or main module
