OK, I just bought this second hand dp 01 fx, so I hjave to be humble but : does it record or not ? In (suposedly) record process, I can hear the piano in the phones, see the sound level on the screen, but nothing comes out that I can hear on the amp - Sure I didn't digest the book yet / Anybody of experience of the beast to make it simpler iof possible ? Also, a minor question : once the digit sound comes out towards a laptop, how do youb get the PC to recognise the Tascam signal on USB out connection, without any driver provided ? TKS a load /// Gerald

Definately read the manual. There is a shutdown prosedure you must follow like with your computer. If you shut down by simply turning the switch in the back off, you're asking for trouble, just like with your computer. The prosedure is to hold down the shut down button until you get the confurmation in the display. answer yes and wait for the shutdown light to begin flashing.
As for recording, you'll ned to select the channels to record to and arm them. select them by holding down one of the two assign buttons at the front. While holding it press the channel button. The button flashes until you release the assign button. press the other assign button and select the second channel to record to if any. There is a switch on the front to choose if you are recording in stereo or mono. you can press one of the assign buttons to remember which of the channels you have assigned to it. press the record button fo that channel to arm it for recording. it will flash slower than when you assigned it. arm the other channel if any in the same way. the input in the back is for pass through only. it can be used to hear audio to play along with if you like, but it won't be recorded. only the inputs in the front are recorded. use the knobs in the front to set the volume. if you see letters in the display, press menu again so that you are looking at the VU meters. use the master fader to turn up the overall sound. when you're ready to record, do just as you would with any tape recorder. press and hold record, then press play too. the channel record buttons will stop flashing and become lit solid, as well as the play and record buttons. You're now recording.
The pan, effect, EQ and channel faders have no affect until you are mastering or bouncing your recording. only the mast is active, and it won't affect the record level. only the front controld will affect this.
Now that you've tested your rrecorder, get the manual out and start learning. There is a lot that this wonderful machine is capable of doing. But you need to learn and practice to become familiar with it and use these fetures.
After micing your song, you must same the master, then put the recorder into USB mode before you can see it with your computer, so read the manual and enjoy.

TASCAM DP-01 won`t startup

Press and hold down the "track edit" and the "shut down" buttons while turning the power on until it says "-init screen- please wait". It will ask you if you want to initialize hdd. If so press yes/enter. This Will wipe your hard drive clean. If no just press no/exit. This works on the dp-01fx. It should work on the dp-01 as well.

How to record with Multi-effects feature on Tascam DP 01

I'm not familiar with the Tascam DP-01 but many multi-track recorders don't commit effects to the track until the mixdown phase. The thinking being that you cannot eliminate a "bad choice" effect once it's down to tape (old school term) and so they allow adding the audio tweaks at the final stages of recording. Here they hope you can appreciate the entire mix and then decide what sweetners to add.

Need help DP-01 basic hook up to synthesizer

Midi on the DP-01 is only for time synching with another device, synth, etc. To hear your synth through the DP-01 run a 1/4" patch cord from the audio outs (R and L) on your synth into the A and B inputs of your DP-01. Then assign the inputs to tracks and arm them for recording. You should then be able to hear your synth playing out of whatever you are using to monitor you DP-01 (headphones, stereo or powered monitors). To record the synth output simply press play and record together on the tascam.

Need to know how to use mic with dp-01

First you'll need to know if your mic is dynamic or requires phantom power. The DP-01 does not provide phantom power, but the DP-01FX and the DP01-FX/CD units have the option of turning on phantom power for their two XRL mic jacks. The DP-01 simply has 1/4" jacks for mics. Typically if your mic comes with a 1/4" plug it will be dynamic, but that isn't always true.

Plug it into the mic/line jack in the front of the unit and turn up the input volume knob. Then depending on which of the two inputs you used you'll have to press the Assign button (A or B) and then the rec button over one of the tracks and turn up the track fader. You'll also need to insure that the master fader is turned up and you should then be able to see the meters moving when speaking into the mic and hear the output in your headphones.

To record simply press the rec button on the assigned track again (it will light steady) to arm the track for recording and press the play and record together.

Hope this helps.

Record, playback problem

Hi Nick,

The fuzz/white noise is a little confusing and it seems to be saying that you are recording something vs trying to record incorrectly and getting nothing at all. Anyway, despite that, I would try going over your recording steps first.

First off make sure your Hi-Z input is not set to the Hi-Z or guitar setting. It is possible your that MicroKorg is overloading the input and distorting. You should however have heard that in the headphones too, so I'm not so sure that's the problem. The next thing to check is to make sure your input is assigned to the track you expect to be recording on. (Press the input's button to check this. The select/record button over the track should flash).

Next make sure your track is armed for recording before you press 'play+record' (Record button above the track should light steady when recording).

Hope this helps.

DJ EQUIPMENT

Lot of possibilities.

The DP-01 is like a mixer with built-in recording capabilies. You could plug your tunrntables into your DP-01 inputs, assign the inputs to tracks(channels) on the DP-01, and then output those tracks to two channels on your mixer (which would be connected to your PA.

Alternatively, you could plug the outs from your mixer into the DP-01 either by routing individual channels from the mixer into the DP-01 inputs, or outputting the mix into a single track (or into two tracks in stereo on your DP-01). Just assign the DP-01 inputs as usual to the tracks you want to record onto.

Those are just a couple of basic ideas. You could also route a DP-01 track (or the whole mix) back out the DP-01 send loop and through some external processors and then back to tracks on your DP-01, or you could do this through the mixer and then record the final result on the DP-01.

If anyone can help me out, please do!

Alternatively you could load your stereo instrumental track into a wav editor, then export each stereo track as a separate mono wav file which you can transfer via usb into you DP-01 and then on you DP-01 import those wav files into two separate tracks which you can pan hard left and hard right so they are in stereo.

Tascam DP-01 FX/CD

Check to find out the size of the active FAT partition. You may have a 'less than optimum' amount of memory left in that partition. Switch to another partition and see if you can record in that one.

Tascam DP-01 FX/CD Digital Portastudio

Here's a link to a forum where someone else encountered the same error. Seems it was due to running out of disc space in that instance.
