I bought need for speed underground 2 for ps2 and when the language selection screen comes up, the controller wouldn't do ANYTHING. I presumed there was something wrong with the pre owned game I'd bought so bought another one. same problem. the controller works fine with all other games. Could my controller not be compatible? it's a ps1 analogue one, but don't think it's dual shock. PLEASE help, love this game and i'm so disappointed I can't play it!

SOURCE: My PS2 will not play PS2 games, but it will play PS1 games

Hi
If it will play DVD's this is a good sign. You will only need to clean the lens of the laser. Also clean the hub that the Disc rides on.
I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.

  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. REmove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the REset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the Cd tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the Cd area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. REmove the little white disc from the Cd tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and your in business.
If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to the Playstation Clinic for Repair. Contact [email protected]

SOURCE: PS2 reads ps1 games but not ps2. Clicking noise

Hi Jstpd,

Boot up your PS2 with no disc in it. Press the Traingle and highlight the top selection. Press the triangle again and then press X then select ON and press X. This should turn on Diagnostics. Do not reboot the PS2, just put a PS2 disc in. This might get it reading PS2 discs again.
If this does work you can follow the procedure for cleaning below:

  13. Do not adjust the white gear at the top of the Laser tray. This is a critical setting that may mess up everything.
  14. Put it back together, and you’re in business.

SOURCE: ps1 games

Are you receiving a disc read error? Or do they simply not load?

In either case, you will want to make sure that your laser is clean. This will require opening the console.

Just google playstation 2 repair and look for free walkthroughs...they are everywhere.

I would boil the problem down to 3 possibilites....

1. Alignment

2. Adjustment of the cd side of your laser potentiometer

3. A simple cleaning of your laser

SOURCE: Slimline PS2 only plays PS1 Games and not PS2

Clean the LAsers Lens with Q-tip lightly dampened with Glass cleaner, then dry the lens. Try it see if that gets it going again.

If not your lasers lens and supporting frame is probably melting down. You will need a new laser.

Need to selct english on the ps2 box itself, its in asain can u help

Remove any disk and close the disk tray. Turn off your system and let it sit for a few seconds before turning it back on. Select the "Language" option from the main menu to open the language menu.
Move the cursor up using the directional pad on your controller until you get to "Language Select." Push the X button repeatedly until it lists "ENGLISH." This changes the audio settings from English to Spanish.
Scroll down to the "Subtitles" option in the language menu and change this setting to Spanish as well. The subtitles will appear in ENGLISH at the bottom of the screen every time a character in the game speaks. If you wish, you can skip this step and rely only on the audio settings.
Press the Circle button on your controller to move back to the main menu, which will save the settings. Select the correct time and date setting for your time zone, if the system asks you to do so. Push the Circle button again to access the main menu.
Place a PS2 game into your console and let the game load. You should now have ENGLISH, settings on your PS2, including subtitles.

Ps2 multi-tap

I had this same problem. Try plug the multi tap into the player 2 port (with a controler in the player 1 port) and so on try different arangement for the controllers (mine worked with the way i wrote). If this doesnt help, a friend of mine had a problem with the contacts in the muti tap (or the controlers), if you are experience you could try open it up and make the contacts stick out a lil more or (more preferably) contact the producer of your multitap they may be able to repair it for a decent fee
