Hi Ayesha. Resetting the device should be able to fix minor problem with the unit. Since resetting the device had no effect, the problem you might encountering there is more of firmware problem. Try to reinstall/upgrade the firmware of your device. Philips has software that is called SONGBIRD. I think you have that one in the cd when you purchased the program You may download the progra,m by clicking here. Below is the procedure on how to perform the uprgade:

Download and install the Phillips Songbird program. Launch the Phillips Songbird software.
Connect the Phillips GoGear MP3 player to your computer using the supplied USB cable. Click the icon of your GoGear MP3 player on the left side of the Songbird interface.

Click the "Tools" tab. Click the "Check for updated firmware" button. If a new update is available for your device, it will be downloaded and applied. Do not disconnect the GoGear MP3 player until the Songbird program tells you that the installation is complete.

Hope this helps..

How to Unfreeze a Phillips GoGear

The GoGear is a portable MP3 player from Philips. If your GoGear freezes up during playback and its menu system becomes unresponsive, you can use a technique called the "soft reset" to get it back up and running. Just like when a computer freezes up and you need to reboot, performing a soft reset on your GoGear will reboot the entire device and allow it to start back up and operate normally.

Instructions

Press down on and hold the "Power" button on your Philips GoGear MP3 player.

Press down on and hold the "Volume Up" button on your Philips GoGear MP3 player. Continue to hold both of these buttons down for three consecutive seconds. The MP3 player will turn itself off.

Press and hold "Power" until your Philips GoGear MP3 player turns itself back on. Your GoGear will no longer be frozen and you can use it as normal.

Mp3 player not recognizing on PC.

MP3 players use the popular USB connection which sometimes produces errors while connecting. These messages are similar to the "Device Not Recognized" error received with various USB devices. Fixing an MP3 player is sometimes specific to the brand, but they are so similar that most can be fixed the same troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

Device Manager

Click "Start" and go to "Control Panel." Double-click "System" and locate the Hardware tab to find the Device Manager. Vista and Windows 7 users can just type "Device Manager' from the start menu.

Locate "Disk Drives" from the list and double-click "Portable Device." If there is an exclamation mark or other error on the device, go to the "Drivers" tab.

Click "Uninstall" and remove the player. Restart the computer and attach the player reinstall the drivers.

Anti-virus conflicts

Plug the player into a different computer to see if it gets recognized. If it does not, contact the manufacturer to find out if it is broken.

Turn off your anti-virus program on your PC if the device works on other computers. Reinstall the drivers using the device manager as described in section 1.

Plug in the player to confirm the connection.

Other solutions

Check the battery level and make sure the batter is not low or depleted. A low battery will sometimes prevent the player from connecting. Let it charge from the power cord, if necessary.

Verify that you have at least Service Pack 1 installed. Go to the Start menu and type "Run." Press Enter.

Type "Winver" in the box and press "Enter." The Windows version will be displayed along with any installed service packs. Download a service pack from Microsoft, if applicable.

Remove the player from the USB port and push a pin into the reset hole located on the bottom. Reconnect to see if the problem is resolved.

Check the connection to make sure it's secure. The cable should fit firmly into both the player and the computer. Connect to a different USB port if you have one available.

Download updated firmware or use the MP3 Recovery Tool provided under Resources (mp3 players).

Tips & Warnings

A bad cable will sometimes prevent a good connection. Use a different one to isolate the cause.

Hope it helped..

If the PC doesn't recognize the device try recovery mode:

Player Recovery

Sometimes, problems still remain even after you reset the player. You need to use the Repair function in the software. Just follow the steps below:

Important: Content stored in the player will be erased after player recovery. We strongly recommend you back up your data before you perform this function.

1. Press and hold the volume plus button (VOL+) and then connect your player to your PC until the Philips Device Manager acknowledges your player and enters the recovery mode.
2. Release the volume-plus button (VOL+) button and then Click on Repair to start the recovery process.
3. Follow the information on the PC screen to disconnect your player when recovery is complete.

I hope this helps you.
Thanks.

I downloaded files on my 8gb philips go gear SA52xx product connecting it to a pc and when i unplug the USB connection of my device after everything it has since then frozen and refusing to work even...

Hi leefordnarte,

You can find a lot of valuable resources on the Philips Support Site...I am not sure which specific model you have, but the Product Support Page for the SA5285/37 can be found here:

http://ow.ly/5XLe9

For the issue you described, I would attempt a Repair/Recovery - this process will restore your player to factory settings, as well as update the firmware in the process.

Try the Philips Device Manager software (found on the support site www.philips.com/support if you do not have your original software disc):

NOTE: Contents will be removed by using the repair function.
  1. Install the Philips Device Manager and run it with your player connected to your PC. You can download it under the Software & drivers section.
  2. Click the Repair tab in the Device Manager, press and hold the corresponding recovery key on the player when connecting it to your PC.

  3. Follow the PC screen to recover your player.
You can find the recovery key on your player from the below table.
