If you do not have a router that you can plug directly into the back of the Xbox 360 then yes you will need to purchase a wireless router to sync up with your wireless router that you already have downstairs. You didn't specify if your broadband router had wireless capabilities? Does it? If not then you will need to buy a wireless router to be able to hook up your Xbox 360.

Microsoft has their own personal wireless router that fits on the back of the Xbox 360 nicely. I would recommend you purchase it due to ease of installation and compatability.

Here is a link to an example of what it looks like: http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-360/accessories/xbox-360-wireless-n-networking-adapter/76045?ref=recpdp&cross=802124

And a cheaper older model: http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-360/accessories/xbox-360-wireless-network-adapter/40678

And here is a link to Xbox step by step wirless hookup: http://support.xbox.com/en-us/pages/xbox-live/get-started/connecting/wireless.aspx

If you are having specific issues then ask away and I can see what I can do to help you out. Try to be specific on what your current setup is and what problems you are having. thanks.

Do u need a wireless adaptor to set up xbox live??

No, a Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter is not required to access, and set up Xbox Live, but you will need an internet connection. If you are close enough to a modem or router, you can buy an Ethernet cord, and plug it in to both the modem/router, and firmly into your Xbox 360 console. You will either need the Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter, or the Ethernet cord. Ethernet cords are very cheaper, much cheaper than a Wireless Adapter, but the Wireless Adapters are much or easier to reason with. So choose wisely with money.

I have installed it onto my computer and done everything the manual says and I have the USB model WNA3100. On the box it says that it is capable of connecting to consoles to support multiplayer gaming. I...

In order to do that you would have to plug this into your xbox 360, not your computer. HOWEVER, Microsoft only supports their own wireless adapter for the xbox 360 .... this one: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Network-Adapter-Networks/dp/B000B6MLV4

I have also heard that wireless gaming can have lesser results. But if you want to do Xbox Live wireless, you will have to have a router and Microsoft's XBOX wifi adapter shown in the link above.

To connect to Xbox live, your best bet is to (if you dont have one) get a router, connect it to your Internet modem, and plug it into the xbox 360 using an ethernet cable.

To use the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter with Xbox Live, you must have a high-speed Internet connection (cable or DSL).

Your wireless networking adapter is designed to attach directly to the back of your Xbox 360™ console.

I am trying to set up xbox live for my son but when i try to go live on the xbox dashboard it says that wireless network not connected but i have a wireless network running in my house and need to know how...

  1. Connect the appropriate wireless network adapter to the console. On the Xbox, a Wi-Fi adapter that connects to the Ethernet port (sometimes also called a wireless network bridge) must be used. Alternatively, the Xbox 360 is also designed to work with certain Wi-Fi game adapters that connect to a USB port.

  2. Turn on the console and navigate to the wireless settings screen. On the Xbox, the menu path is "Settings -> Network Settings -> Advanced -> Wireless -> Settings" On the Xbox 360, the menu path is "System -> Network Settings -> Edit Settings."

  3. Set the SSID (network name) on the Xbox to match that of the wireless router. If your wireless router has enabled SSID broadcast, the SSID name should appear pre-selected on the Xbox display. Otherwise, select the "Specify Unlisted Network" option and enter the SSID there.

  4. Specify "Infrastructure" as the Network Mode. (Infrastructure is the mode used by wireless routers.)

  5. Set the Security Type to match that of the wireless router. If your router uses WPA encryption and the type of adapter connected to the Xbox does not support WPA, you will need to change your router settings to use WEP encryption instead. Note that the standard Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter supports WPA while the standard Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter (MN-740) only supports WEP.
  6. Save your settings and verify the network is functional.

On the Xbox, the Wireless Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made with the wireless router, and the Connect Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made through the Internet to Xbox Live.

On the Xbox 360, use the "Test Xbox Live Connection" option instead.
Tips:
  1. Even when your wireless connection between the Xbox and the router is working perfectly, you may still experience difficulty connecting to Xbox Live. These issues can be caused by the quality of your Internet connection or the firewall and Network Address Translation (NAT) settings of your wireless router. Additional troubleshooting may be required in these areas to achieve reliable Xbox Live connections.
What You Need:
  • Active Xbox Live subscription (to access services)

Xbox 360 wireless adapter connection

Try resetting your router and reconfiguring. Secondly try using a different wireless security mode that the 360 adapter supports. If the router is a linksys, that could be the problem. Linksys has a very common drop problem. I have found that D-Link has better integrity for wireless devices. Also try putting another device on the network via Wireless, if the same result, replace the router. Also, you can do a search on google for wireless router tweaks, to optimize the router for and xbox wireless connection. One more thing. be sure you force an ip address for the adapter in the settings area on the 360. That promises the same IP everytime it connects. Then go into your router configuration and forward the ports for xbox live, the wireless connection may not even be dropping, but a port problem with live while trying to authenticate your game system

The following ports must be available for Xbox Live to operate correctly:
• UDP 88
• UDP 3074
• TCP 3074
