SOURCE: Freezer cool, but Frig section is not cool
Volman, take a look in the freezer section and see if you have a heavy build-up of frost on the back panel. You want to take the evap cover off and see if the evaporator is frozen up. If so, your refer did not go into defrost and cannot move the air over to the refer side. If this is the case you will have to defrost that evaporator completely. On these Amanas the culprit is usually the bi-metal which sits on the evaporator. Look at it and see if it's buldged. The part number for the bi-metal is ro131661. If you defrost the evap your refer will start cooling again normally until it freezes over again. This will give you time to replace the bimetal....Catriver...post back.

Geezer, sounds like a defrost issue. I usually find the bi-metal to be the culprit on this model. Check out the pic. You will have to remove the back panel in the freezer and defrost the evaporator. Remove the ice maker if there is one. The back cover has 4 quarter inch screws. remove those. The air vent has 2 plastic clips one each side and one on the bottom, push in and pull the grill off. The thermistor cover has a slot for a flat blade screw driver, push in and pull the cover off. The thermistor will now slide behind the back panel. Check the bi-metal for buldging. As long as the evaporator fan is working, it's probably a defrost problem.

Chances are if they are getting cool but not cold-
1) the evaporator fan in the freezer is not running
2) Defrost heater has failed
3) Defrost sensor has failed
4) Defrost timer/refrigerator control has failed.
Check for ice build-up on the back wall of the freezer. If there is ice, unplug or turn the unit off for 6-8 hours with the doors open (put any food in a cooler with ice to maintain). Note water may come out of the refrigerator.
Plug the unit back in or turn it back on, close the doors, and check temperature after a couple of hours of operation. If all OK, you will need to have the above tested, or, if you know how to use a multimeter and can read a schematic/wiring diagram, I can instruct you on how to check the above.

The fan that should circulate air between the two compartments has failed.
These usually have 'sleeve' bearings which can become sticky and fail to start up without help.
Go to the Sears/parts website and enter your Amana model number; if you are lucky, they will have a line drawing of your model which can aid in finding how to access the fan:
Sears Parts Dept.
They have info for thousands of non-Sears items and most can be ordered via that website as well.

My Amana refrigerator was making a buzzing sound the other night and I discovered everything in the freezer needed to be dumped. It appears to shut on/shut off. The freezer works for a few hours and then shuts down. It is only 4 years old.
