Prime is the term we use to state that the air has been mostly purged from the pump and the pump is moving water. When you have lost the prime, your pump is no longer pumping water through it. Sometimes it can be very difficult to regain the prime on the pump. This will tell you how to get the prime back in these difficult situations

Open the top, dump water in it while it is turned on. If it is struggling to pull water through, you may have a clogged impeller. If not let it prime and when it starts pulling water through quickly, put the cap back on quickly.

Sometimes my pump will loose prime and the number one problem i found is my lid on my strainer basket connected to the pump was to tight...go figure but when i loosened it a lil it started to pump....also sometimes if your water level is low then it takes time to fill up in the skimmer and it will loose prime that way so make sure u have adequate amount of water in your pool.

SOURCE: lost prime

Turn off the pump at the timer and remove the lid to your pump where you empty the debris from the basket. Get a hose or bucket and fill that resevoir with water and get the lid back on as quickly as possible. Turn on the pump and it should start to prime. On the filter, there is a air relief valve. Depending on the filter, it will pinch and twist, or there is a knob to uncrew. Doing that as the motor is running allows tbhe air that has built up inside to puge out. Once a steady stream comes out close the relief valve. May need to tryh it more than once.

SOURCE: my intex pool pump is surging and won't stay primed???

i think its pump side first as its easier to push water through a filter rarther than trying to **** it , Also the only reason it could loose its prime is through air getting in the system.

SOURCE: how do you prime the pump for intex ubove ground

THIS HAS PRESSURE ON THE PUMP WHEN IT IS HOOKED UP TO THE POOL , NO PRIMING IS NEEDED. NOW IF IT'S HIGHER THAN THE WATER LINE OF THE POOL THIS KIND OF PUMP WILL NOT WORK , YOU NEED A PUMP THAT HAS A HAIR BASKET . THESE YOU FILL THE BASKET UP AND REPLACE THE LID AND YOU PRIMED IT.. . IF'N I WAS ANY HELP VOTE FOR ME ...THANKS.. JAY

How to prime an A O Smith pool pump

if the pump is higher than the pool, you should have a ball valve at the front of the pump. close this valve, fill pump housing with water. close the system, open the valve and turn on pump. if the pump is below the pool level, you shouldnt have this problem.

Prime

Hi to prime your pump you fill the strainer basket with water and make sure all connections are tight with no leaks. Once you seal the lid turn on your pump and it should prime. If you have an issue you can force water through the suction line by putting a hose in the skimmer and force the water through your suction line. Time to Open the Swimming Pool

Pool pump wont prime when in pool mode, but will run in hot tub mode. Hot tub is 3 ft higher than the pool... is this a bad impeller? I think it may have run for a few hours without a prime , as I...

I assume that it pumps from/to the hot tub. If so, the pump is fine. Look for any air leaks in the piping/hoses from the connection in the pool to the inlet of the pump.

No water flow,, think its needs to be primed

What brand of pool pump do you have? The pump is separate from this pool filter so I would have to know the brand and model to tell you how to prime it.

Not self priming itself. when it turns off the water pushes back out of the skimmer and pushes the basket up. it loses water and the pump cant re-prime itself.

PRIME PUMP, OPEN AIR VALVE ON FILTER. OR TAKE THE LID OFF YOUR FILTER AND SEE IF IT STARTS TO PUMP... YOU DO HAVE IT PLUMBED RIGHT? THE PIPE COMING OUT OF THE PUMP GOES TO THE FILTER !! I'M YOUR LOCAL POOL PUMP REPAIR GUY IN LONGWOOD FLORIDA. WHERE THE POOL IS ALWAYS OPEN

Can you bypass the heater so pool can prime

The pool return pipes are connected to the heater with pipe unions. You could get a set of unions to match them and make a "U" shaped pipe section to bypass the heater. using a couple of 90's and the unions .

My Jet Pump Looses it's prime at night.

I assume the pump is not running at night. If the pump is higher than the pool, and the inlet and outlet to the pool are both under water, then you have a small leak. This could be allowing the water to leak out of the line. Or, if the leak is higher than the pool surface it is allowing air to leak into the line, which allows the prime to run down into the pool. If you found this useful, please vote. Thanks.
