People often feel panic when I see this. If I format the drive, will I lose all my data? If not, how could I get access to my files?

My take is that you may have to format the drive and then use data recovery software to recover your files.

Here's some information about file recovery, think you need to take a look, very useful

Firstly, recover your photos on the hard drive with third party data recovery software. Then you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed. For data recovery software,I have a professional one on my computer that can It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drive crash, system sabotage, virus corrupted partitions etc.You can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your photos can be recovered. Get it from http://www.any-data-recovery.com

1). Do not format this drive. The formatting process often make thing worse. So, in case of data loss, you'd better never format it before you've restored all these photos back.
2). Do not save anything new on this drive in case of data loss.
3). Download a hard drive data recovery freeware to restore these photos back for free from this unformatted hard drive . Not all of the data recovery programs over the internet could work as efficiently as we think.
So, I would recommend you to try a hard drive data recovery freeware that has ever successfully retrieved all the inaccessible data of my friend:
http://www.freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/03/external-drive-need-to-be-formatted.html

4). Follow the instructions to retrieve all your needed data back.
5). Do not save these restored pictures on the same drive in case of data recovery failure.

Did you format the HDD before putting into your laptop? If not, try using a Linux-flavor partitioning tool such as Partition Magic or DiskPart and format the HDD.

My WD My Passport external Hard Drive ! TB formatted for Mac is not reading my files

A Windows PC computer will not read files on the WD hard drive that has been formatted on a MAC.
The fix.
Copy your photos onto the MAC computer then remove the WD hard drive and connect it to your Windows PC and format the WD hard drive in FAT32 file system.
After formatting has been completed remove the WD hard disk and connect it to the MAC computer. The MAC can read and write to a Windows FAT32 formated hard disk. You can now copy the photos from the MAC to the WD hard disk. When copying is complete, remove the WD hard drive and connect the WD hard drive to your Windows PC and you can now copy the photo from the WD hard disk to your Windows PC.

Transfering photos to my Iomega Prestige 500GB Portable Hard Driv

Does the Iomega show up under 'my computer'?
It should be another drive (D, E, F whatever) and as such you put stuff on to it the same way you would put stuff on to your C drive.

HDD not recognised

HI Your Hard Drive is previously formatted and have done different partition provided by your previous machine where you took this hard drive from. Use "The Partition Magic" Software, it will help you to fix and repartition your hard drive in the new format. I have this problem before and now my hard drive can connect with any computer. The key in this issue is any hard drive goes with the original machine has been formatted and do its own partition from manufacturer so if you take it out later for use with other machine, you will need a software to completely rearrange the new partition in universal format so other computers can recognize it. This manufacturer purpose to protect your data from hacking, stealing once you take it out from the original machine. That is why when you connect it to other machine, this hard drive will not be recognized. I has this partition magic software and can make you a copy so you don't have to buy it. Just read the instruction and you can fix it for both 2.5" and 3.5" HD. Please email me at [email protected] and provide me your mailing address, I can send the copy software to you. Regards, pingping
