All cables are attached. Other functions working fine. Whenever I select scan and press the "start" key (the two buttons on the right-hand side, one says "black" and the other says "color"), nothing works. After selecting "scan", I receive the prompt to "place document on platen glass and press (insert button symbol)", but when I press the button -- either the one for black, the one for color, or both of them together -- nothing happens.
TIA for any help.
I was having the same problem as the original poster of this thread, where nothing was happening, and this was what i did:
using a mac, i:
- spotlight searched "image capture" (that's what it's called) and opened up the app
- it somehow "woke up" my printer, aka connected the printer to the app, and it would scan the overview, but not scan the final selection that i made. see comnomad's post if you don't know the difference between overview vs. scan.
- so i restarted my printer
- i then did the overview, selected the parts that i wanted, and scanned it again
tada!
I had this same problem too. It took me a while to figure it out - not to mention surfing the web for a bunch of sites all with people writing about the same problem. I downloaded the latest driver, checked all the cables, hit every support website I could find, etc. Nothing worked. Then I did +one little thing+ and it worked. I'm assuming that you figured out the problem by now, it's kind of silly.
When you open Image Capture it projects an image from the scanner to your screen. But *YOU* still have to go to the image and select what you want to scan. When you place your cursor on the image and then click and drag, you're capturing the area that you want scanned. When you do this you will see all the dimensions of the scan area captured in the Scan Setup box to the right of the image. You can manually go in and change the dimensions to match the material your scanning (8x10, 4x6, 8.5x11, etc) as well as adjust the resolution or increase or decrease the size.
Once you get it figured out it works pretty slick. Unfortunately the directions aren't very obvious and the interface on the printer is a bit misleading. Hope this works for you (and anyone else who suffered this issue).
This seems to be a USB issue. I had exactly the same problem, switched to a different USB port, and everything worked perfectly.

Same problem here and on-line manual will not open at all .
exactly the same problem (windows xp). have the newest drivers but it still doesn't work. any ideas?
I just hooked mine up today and have the same problem! Have you figured out what to do yet?
Same problem but with Mac OS X. Maddening. I can see the scanned image on my Screen using Image Capture, but the [Scan] button on the Mac is grayed out and no button on the printer/scanner will make anything happen. It just sits there. I went to Canon's website and downloaded the latest driver for my OS, but that didn't do anything.
Also, this same error appears on the Apple site and it hasn't been answered there either. Very frustrating!
Same problem for mac OS
Having exactly the same problem as the original poster describes.
exactly the same problem.
nothing helps....
I had the same problem and thanks to this website I got the solution. Canon could of been a bit more useful in their instructions.
Exactly the same! Nothing happens when I try to scan
The issue for me is that my computer doesn't even recognize the scan driver... I can print, so the printer is definitely connected, but it won't scan
I am having the same problem. Would switching from Windows XP to 7 cause this? Does 'something' need to be downloaded?
