My friend said he fried this Power Acoustik PTID-8200 7" DVD player by connecting both the yellow and red wires to the battery. What is it that likely happened and how can it be repaired

Make sure the yellow wire is going to a source that is still hot when the key is turned off. The yellow wire controls the memory and must have voltage going to it all of the time.
This is a car audio video unit So to connect this unit electrically, they usually require 3 wires for power for it to switch on.
The thick black wire is a earth or negative wire, which connects to the negative side of the battery or to the body of the car.
Then there is a red and yellow wire.
The thicker of the 2 wires red or yellow is constant 12volt power, which should be connected to the positive side of the battery or to constant 12volts in the car wiring plug.
The other red or yellow which is the thinner of the 2 is a accessory wire, which means it has 12 volt power only when you turn the key to accessory or motor running.
So yes both RED and YELLOW require power for the unit to be on .
This is for radio station presets so it doesn't loose memory when you turn the key off, otherwise every time you turn the key you would have to store your stations again.
I hope this helps you. If so please leave a vote or comment.
