Little Giant 506400 SPBS-12 Pump Logo

Hi! After a power outage my Little Giant SPBS-12 backup system sounded an alarm that wouldn't quit even after power was restored (it was only off for an hour). When unplugged the louder and more screeching alarm was eliminating, leaving a lower but still annoying high-pitched tone seemingly powered by the battery (disconnecting the battery was the only way to stop it). After a day I reconnected the battery and neither tone returned, but a day later and the lesser of the two sounds is back, but far softer than before. I don't know much about sump pumps at all so this is confusing. The battery charger does not show a full or partial recharge light, just the red power light. Any ideas?

What is the age of the unit? Those batteries don't last forever and are constantly under a small charge. When the outage happened the battery discharged and the sensing circuit was able to tell that the battery was no longer any good.

Sounds like you may have a 220V pump. So you need to confirm that this is a 110V pump and not a 220V pump. There should be a label or more info on line with any other info on the label. If you can confirm that this is a 110V pump, then put a standard plug on the cord - the green is ground and the other two can be wired to either blade of the plug. If you do have a 220V pump and you connect it to 110V anyway, the pump will perform poorly and will probably overheat and fail.

SOURCE: Our old sump pump went

The rs-5 switch is supposed to turn the pump on at 6 inches to 10 inches of water from the bottom of the switch and shut the pump off when the water gets to 1 inch to 4 inches from the bottom of the switch. Sometimes the pump takes a while to prime itself the first time it starts up. The noise at the end of the cycle is not unusual either.
Is water coming back to the pump causing the switch to close?
However, going on & off almost immediately is not right. Is the switch installed in a specific location that it is designed to fit on the pump?
It does sound like the switch is going back on at too low a water level.
Also, make sure it is not a rs-5LL for low level. Even this should not allow the pump to go on and off.

SOURCE: My Little Giant pump (554405) is connected to our

Hi,
There could be gunk in the bottom....then the float does not work right and the pump will not pump either...

remove the pipes and/or hoses and then the screws that hold down the top....clean the inside really well and reassemble... that may work,,,, but it may already be burnt up...

if cleaning does not work the replace the pump...you should be able to buy a new one at a HVAC supply house or some place like HD or Lowes...they will be in the 50.00 or less range...

Hi,
The float switch went bad... probably because of the water...you could replace it, but the parts are hard to get and with the time involved it will be easier and cheaper to replace it...

The only way to restore the setting is through a Backup & Restore card plugged into the system. Also check the system batteries. This will keep power to system during an outage.

Hi don-eyre300.
Double check your suction side of the pump for obstructions if not then it is time to replace your pump...sounds like the impeller and housing is worn beyond repair.
