You could possibly try a BIOS update to see if ASUS added it. If not than you will have to boot from HD or CDROM or floppy if need be!

You must configure the BIOS prior to booting up from USB. With the USB inserted, go to the BIOS setup and change the boot priority as explained on the official user's guide from ASUS (page 61):

ASUS K8N Motherboard support: -
2 x Serial ATA cables - 2 x UltraDMA 133/100/66/33
1 x 2-port SATA power cables - 2 x Serial ATA, support RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, JBOD

Your mainboard support both "IDE & SATA" interface, so you can use IDE or SATA Hard Drives.

The south chipset bridge of my Asus k8n-vm motherbard heats up

85 to 95 is ok. Anything higher than100 is pushing it. If possible add a fan to the side of the system case (Best choice) or you can buy a south bridge fan. You're MB doesn't have holes in the MB to attach a chipset fan but you can still attach a cooler on to the chipset. Like this fan; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103155
And you'll need this as well for a good bond; http://www.outletpc.com/c2019.html

Enjoy!

PC won't boot if SATA drive connected, drive works fine if plugged afterward

Try Hirens Boot CD. It has a lot of programs on it to detect format etc.
I think your hard drive has a missing or corrupt MBR and it needs to be replaced.
When I have had a hard dive not recognized I hve used Super Fdisk to format and reset hard drive.

ASUS K8N-VM mother board win98 drives

Try going to the Asus website and look for support for your MB drivers and Operating System.

If there is no longer any Win98 support for your MB then I suggest a fresh computer and more recent software for less hassle!
A ten year old OS indicates to me that you might be stuck until you go with the flow!
Cruel but true.
Hopefully the recent cheap prices for computers pre-installed with Vista or XP will persuade you.

first check the specs according to the manual of your ram memory. is this complies rom the manual? did you installed video card? if you installed video card then temporarily remove this and use the on board. if still doesn't boot the ram memory is the problem. there are diferent kinds of beep sound according to hardware problem we have the long beep, a continous beep and so on.
