Switch the amplifier 'ON' with its power ON/OFF switch; and listen whether there is a relay cliking sound after 10 seconds or so after switch ON. This amplifier has a delalyed output circuit, which will energize all the speakers after a pre-determined time [10 to 15 seconds normally]. You can hear its 'click sound' after this predtermined time. If there is is any short circuit this wound will not be there, and the amplifier go to protection mode. Just unplug all the speakers and do this test. If there is no such 'click' sound heard, the delay circuit inside your amplifier is faulty and need service. This is not a user repairable one. Inform me after this check. OK

The unit has some trouble with its internal audio output circuit. It goes to protection mode as you reports. The main reason for this fault is short circuit in the output section; whic cannot be predicted to which component inside has the trouble. The set needs a through checkup to its audio output section. This is actually a very skilled job, must have measuring equipemts and experience in servicing such high-watt amp systems. It will be best for you to get it repaired by any trusted technician you know well, of by its authorised service center. Most of technicians can do this work, as all amplifier circuits will be similar in nature, but have some minor differences in circuit and component locations. Never connect speakers again to this set, as it may damge the voice coil of the speakers too. Connect it after the fault has been rectified. OK.

Power wont turn on on my motorola DCP-501

Sounds like The main power supply regulator section circuit fault. Either it will be a separate board, or the part of main board. Check and replace damaged component/s at its main power regulator [SMPS] section circuit. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. What will cause disc error on the motorola dcp 501

Either a dirty laser, faulty tracking mechanism, or a weak laser(aging) will cause unit to mistrack. When this happens the mechanisms are replaceable and not repairable.

No Sound on a Motorola DCP-501

You don't say what else works. Have you tried it with FM to eliminate external source causes? Does your TV get audio passed through to it? That would establish that there is program material to be amplified. Headphones work?

The following is from the User Guide -

Check to make sure that each speaker has been properly connected to the
speaker output jacks on the rear panel of the DCP501.
Check that the speakers are working by utilizing the Test Tone function as
described in the “Operation” section.
Verify that the DCP501 has not been placed in MUTE mode.
Check that the volume control on the DCP501 has been adjusted to an
appropriate listening volume.
Verify that the DCP501 is set to the correct source (CATV, VCR, DVD, Tape,
etc).
 If the front panel displays O V E R L O A D , one of two things has happened:
1 If the DCP501 detects the speakers have a short circuit, it shuts down
the amplifiers. Switch the DCP501 off, remove the short circuit, and turn
the DCP501 back on. The DCP501 should now work as normal. If
O V E R L O A D is still displayed, a short circuit condition remains.
2 If the maximum amplifier output power is exceeded, the DCP501 shuts
down the amplifiers. Turn down the volume a little and switch the
DCP501 off and then switch the DCP501 back on and the DCP501
should now work as normal. If O V E R L O A D is still displayed, turn the
volume down some more.

The Speaker Setup menu has a Speaker Reset (to default settings) option.

DVD Player won't work

DVD's: does it display any kind of error? All DVD's?

To your second question.

The manual explains cable and TV hookup for CABLE but there is no mention of off-air TV tuning.

If you don't have the manual go to:
http://www.retrevo.com/support/Motorola-DCP501-Receivers-manual/id/393bh936/t/2/ and register to get it. It's free.

Motorola DCP-501 and PPV

It takes registration of the unit to receive them and it would be unethical and illegal to post a way to hack them here...

The clear protective film on the DCP501 display must be removed and transferred to the inside back cover of your
DCP501 Home Theater System User Guide. The Unit Address and Serial Number found on the protective film is
required for activation of your DCP501 cable TV receiver by your cable TV service provider.

Motorola DCP-501

  • Likely there is a little battery inside that has lost its juice, or possibly a capacitor that just lost its charge from lack of being powered for a year. No power=no memory=lost settings. You might open it up and look around for a small hearing aid type battery. If you find it, replace it and you will probably be good to go. if it is a capacitor that has leaked its charge, download the schematic from somewhere online, print it out and bring the schematic and unit to your local service guy where he will charge you at least $75 for labor for a $1 part install.
