Hi
Just try with component input, and see whether it works fine. If it works fine with component input, the tuner section in your TV has got damaged. Soem Vizio sets will have dual tuner; one for analogue and the other for digital. Lighning stroke will damage the tuners first, than any other components inside a TV, because it has been alway connected to cable. Check the component video. If it also does not work, the mother board of your TV is faulty. Some type of fault will be repairable. If the fault is serious, you have to replace its main board istself. OK.

I had the same problem with my Vizio SV370XVT when my digital Comcast boxes in the house got fried. My HD ports on the tv are trash now, but I am able to get an HD signal via the component port. I tried replacing the main board, but that did absolutely nothing. I just gave up and purchased a component switch. I was at my wits end looking for an answer but your response helped finally. Thanks!

How check pcb after lightning strikes??

Over voltages as little as 20% greater than expected (under the right circumstances) can cause components to fail with no outward indication of failure. Other times, these same or greater voltages will obliterate a component and without the benefit of a schematic will make identifying & replacing it impossible.

Nearby lightning strikes often cause multiple components on different PCB to fail at the same time, complicating troubleshooting significantly. Faults can appear on power supply PCBs and in the RF stages along antenna / cable inputs and out to cable boxes DVD players, etc.

These are usually not fixed by DIYers without specialized test equipment and manufacturer's service manuals.

Will a nearby lightning strike cause a power board failure?

It could happen yes it would depend where the strike entered the TV. Not all lighting strikes hit on the electrical lines, on a TV they can come through the cable, as well as a antenna if you have one hooked up.

Lightning struck and now no picture on my tv- sound works tho

I think the digital input selector section has got affected. I suggest it is better to refer it to a qualified service technician, since the back cover has to be opened for investigation.

Toshiba 37AV500U damaged thru HDMI input.

The lightning stroke has been effected to the main digital board to your TV. It will be best to replace the main digital board as card basis, rather than trying to repair it. Before replacing the board, a through checkup should be done. Contact any expereienced service technician for help, as this work is a very skilled one. No body can predict about the damages to a lightning stroke, as there will be trillions of voltage present for every stroke, and even a slightest voltage can damage so many components in a TV like equipment, as it is designed to work for 110 or 220VAC.

We had a tree struck by lightning last night. Now, our truck and sports car, parked 10 feet away, are both showing problems with charging system, (truck) and ABS, tracking system, and active handling...

Yes. Although the tires are suppose to insulate, there is enough humidity to allow the air to carry a charge. The ECM for example, can be interfered with by Radio frequencies. A lightning strike produces all kinds of freqencies beyond visible light.

You should document the tree strike and park your vehicles back into their spots if you do not already have photos of the tree damage showing the vehicles in the foreground or background.

This is comprehensive coverage with hidden damage discovered within a recent timeframe of the original event.

My tv comes on and has "unusable signal" floating on it

What is your signal source, OTA or cable? Did lightning or another type of power surge recently hit? Make sure you have the TV on the desired input.

If OTA check your antenna direction and that you have the Channel Setup (from the menu) set to Antenna. Also check if you have the right antenna to get stations in your area. Antennaweb.org gives the most likely channels and directions. tvfool.com will give more detailed information and more stations. Both sites assume outdoor antennas but the direction information is always good. Look for new construction or big trees that might block the signal. Do you have multiple TVs sharing the same antenna? You might need an amplifier.

If cable, check the Channel setup. Check for someone recently damaging your cable installation (cutting the wires, trying to split the signal to get it for free) Splitting the signal to multiple TVs may also be an issue, get an amplifier of the correct type. Some cable systems may require a bidirectional amplifier.

If you recently had a power surge, see if the TV works with other inputs.
Tuners can be replaced if the TV is worth the labor costs for you.

I hope this helps.

( My household had three tvs and a digital to analog converter that lost their tuners after a nearby lightning strike. We chose to replace the TVs since two were over 15 years old and the third was also out of warranty.)
