If the dial does not rotate but manual override works, then the timer is wired incorrectly or polarity of line is reversed or you are connecting to 240Volt line instead of 120V.
1) You have wires from breaker box reversed with wires that goes to sprinkler solenoid. Switch black wires and see if that corrects problem.
2) Check that breaker supplying voltage is 120Volt.
3) Test if black wire from breaker tests 120V to ground wire, and test that white wire from breaker tests 0 volts to ground.

Intermatic dial doesn't automatically switch sprinklers

1) Trippers can wear down. Transformer can go bad if model has 24Volt output. Relay can go bad.

2) Add a comment Feb 2013 with model number, and include if this is new timer or older timer that worked before and stopped working.

I installed the GE Basic Timer 15070 ok. I set on and off times followint the insdtructions several times. The time will tunr the light on at the set on time but it never turns the light off at the set off...

Something doesn't sound right.
I have two of these timers and cannot figure out what your timer is doing, unless wiring is wrong or timer is defective, or you connected timer to 3-way switch.

15070 is single pole analog timer that requires neutral wire.
Slide switch is set to 'Timer' for automatic timer functions.

Open following links to identify timer and see wiring and how to set analog timers:

Manual switch works timer doesn't.

Timer that worked before and stopped working: could be clock motor or trippers
New timer installation: possibly the wiring from breaker box and wire to Load are reversed.

I have a Tork 1101 timer and up until now has worked fine. Now it won't shut off. The mechanical on/off tabs are set correctly. It turns on and as the timing wheel comes around, the shut off tab...

If clock is rotating on time, next suspect is P47 trippers have worn down. Trippers are made of softer metal so they wear down instead wearing down the on-off lever, and that way the timer lasts longer.

You say clock doesn't work.
Add a comment with following information:
Do you have timer with analog dial?
Does dial rotate as time passes?
Does dial keep good time?
Have you put the black and red trippers in place?
Are trippers push all the way down?
Have you set current time by rotating clock dial 2 full turns before rotating dial to current time?

My intermatic controller only works manually?

That is a 120 volt timer with a 24 volt output .. if the valves are being activated manually but the clock wheel is not turning to select the zones automatically, first check the wheel . it can become hung up when setting the time, and not be set on its spindlle so it can rotate with the clock motor. If the clock wheel is set and still does not turn, then the clock may be bad

Timer stopped working Manual mode turns things

Usually the timer motor is bad when that happens. You can purchase a new timer motor here (or at a similar website):
http://www.aplussupply.com/intermatic/timer.htm
If you don't want to mess with replacing the timer motor can can buy another time clock and as long as your existing enclosure is still in good shape, just swap out the guts.
