Hello Ice,
Please check the battery of the Nikon Coolpix 4100 Digital Camera. Please check the battery is fully charged or may be its damaged if its swollen. Also check the contact points of battery and camera and clean it. Insert the battery and charge it fully. When the battery gets charged fully then press the power button 4 to 5 times to start it. If the battery is damaged then replace the battery with new battery.

Please check the voltage on the battery and then the voltage on the terminals of the battery in teh camera. If this is not seen then the camera circuit has a fault. If battery is low then it must be replaced.
Also check the adaptor voltage. if there is no life when the camera is pressed to switch on then the camera control panel can be faulty, Open only if you are equipped to check on the circuit , the start switch and the processor.

Please verify that you have the correct option selected for the Charge by computer, MENU > SETUP MENU > Charge by Computer. Also, try it with a backup battery. If the problem persists you need to send the camera and the charger to be evaluated.

Your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your batteries may need to be replaced, or the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

We own a Nikon Coolpix camera as well, which uses regular AA or rechargeable AA batteries.
Assuming you have tried new batteries, (if you haven't, try new alkaline batteries), it's probably time to get a warranty replacement.
You might want to also look at the battery connections inside the camera to make sure they are clean and making good contact with the batteries.
Good luck
