When you say "change the fluid" you are talking about the transmission oil? When you did this what colour was it? If it was dark brown or black and had a burnt smell that is the surest sign that your transmission is cooked. If this is the case you actually finished the job by changing the fluid as the particles of clutch plate and metal particles from the gears were what was giving the transmission the friction to allow it to shift. By removing the particles and adding fresh lubricant, the transmission now slips. Which is why it won't stay in gear or change gears. You are going to need to have the transmission rebuilt, or depending on the damage to the gears possibly replaced. Given the age of the vehicle and the cost of the repair you will have to decide if you want to spend the money to fix it.

I cant seem to get my r1 to change pass third gear, i seem to be able to get first and second gear ok then the gear change lever almost seems to lock up when trying to change up,it will change back down...

The bike has a bent shift fork in the transmission. You describe the classic symptoms. The engine will have to come out of the frame. Then it gets flipped upside down, right and left side covers, shift shaft, and other components are removed, then the bottom half of the gearbox is removed. This allows access to the shift drum and shift forks. There are some special tools needed and I don't recommend a novice mechanic tackles the job. Below is a diagram of how the shift drum moves the shift forks left and right to make a slider gear engage different gears. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_116.gif

I bought a new tranny for my car but the gears still wont change.

NEW as in BRAND NEW?? im assuming you installed it already and remembered to BOLT UP THE TORQUE CONVERTER, FILLED THE TRANNY WITH THE RIGHT KIND OF ATF AND RIGHT AMOUNT. i would recheck all the electrical plugs for corrosion and make sure u didnt leave any GROUND WIRES OFF/LOOSE. also make sure that the tranny u bought is the exact same MODEL TRANNY AS THE OLD ONE.(numbers/letters match) there could be more than one possible trans.for your car. also there is a possibility that the PCM(computer) needs to be FLASHED/REPROGRAMMED. Have u ever replaced a tranny before??
