make sure that when you installed the software, that the scanner wasn't plugged into the laptops USB port. That is a known issue with USB devices. If they are plugged in during the install, there's a good chance that they may not work. Always wait for the software to prompt you to plug the device in

Currently there is no driver available for win 7.But one of my friends had the same issue and he
fixed it by asking windows to automatically find the driver from internet and it worked for him.So I suggest you try the same,this is what you need to do

1) First go to control panel,then open Program and Features.
2) Uninstall any driver for the Visioneer 4400 scanner that you have previously installed and reboot the computer,if there is no driver installed then skip this step.
3) Make sure your scanner is connected to the computer,now right click on "My Computer" and click "Manage"
4) Now choose "Device Manager" from the left panel and it should list all the devices on your computer on the right side.
5) Now select the option "Scan for Hardware changes" from "Action" menu on the same window,you can also do this by right clicking on any of the device name in the list (ex,drivers,keyboard) and choose "Scan for Hardware Changes"
6)A new category named "Imaging Devices" should appear on the device list now and when you expand it by clicking on the arrow, it should show your scanner as "42 Bit USB Scanner"
7)Now right click on "42 Bit USB Scanner" and select "Update Driver Software".
8) Now choose the first option,"Scan Automatically for updated driver Software" and Windows
should automatically find a working driver and install it.Now your scanner should work.

It looks like the manufacturer does not have Vista support for this model, any how, here is the link from their website. You still should be able to use WinXP drivers. When Vista belly aches tell it to use the driver anyway, Vista will discard what it doesn't need and load it just the same. I hope this helps.

Nopp! its not, at least on the manufactures site it isent. they only peovide windows drivers for that one.

Here is what worked for me. I have 32 bit Windows Vista. I do not think that this will work on a 64 bit Vista, as I don't think that a 32 bit driver will work on the 64 bit Vista.

Go to this URL:

And download the 4400.303110.exe file to your computer.

Next: Click on "Start Search", and paste in
"mshta.exe res://acprgwiz.dll/compatmode.hta" without the quotes.
This will start the "Program Compatibility Wizard"

NOTE: The "Start Search" will appear when you click on the round Windows button at the lower left hand side of your Windows Vista desktop. It's right under "All Programs". Just paste that command in that box.

Then, just follow through.
When prompted for the program to run, select
"I want to locate the program manually" and point to the driver setup file you want to execute, which will be the file that you just downloaded.

Under the page that says to "Select a compatibility mode for the program"

Choose: 'Microsoft Windows XP (Service Pack 2)'

You don't have to select anything on the "Select display settings for the program" page.

On the next page, select "Run this program as an administrator".

You should be all set to go. I did see one complaint about a missing dll file, but it worked anyway.

Only Windows XP is the latest available. You might want to contact their tech support department to see if there is a patch for it.
