Hi The sound comes when there is ice build up around the fan
and the fan will hit it causing this sound. You can try to leave it unplugged
for around 4-24hrs and also make sure that the area near the back is clear so
that airflow can get through. If the issue returns then replace the thermostat.
Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance. Daniel
I have had what sounds like the same problem for over a year with my Samsung RF263 refrig. It makes very loud popping noises like expansion noises when heat hits your house siding or a railroad track. The noises are loud enough that they actually startle people, and our cat. I had a repair man in last May 2013 but no luck.
I finally did a lot of listening, testing, etc. and found the problem. I noticed it would occur whenever the compressor came on. I thought it might be ice build up, so I took the cover plate off over the evaporator in the back of the refrig compartment. There was no ice build up. I then left the cover off and wiring attached and no noise after a day. After a few other trials I added some more weather stripping to increase the distance between the evaporator coils and the cover plate and that help quite a bit but not totally. I still get a pop now and then. Another problem I noticed with this partial solution is that it causes the shelving to not be aligned. A 'V' gap forms between the shelves and they droop a little. I'm still trying to figure out how to fix this but haven't had any good ideas yet.
This is a very annoying problem and a design flaw in my opinion. Whether Samsung has a solution for it I don't know but I plan on checking before my warranty runs out.

Thanks for your reply. I will do as you suggest and see if this solves the problem. Would this be a regular add-on the continual maintenance of this appliance? (An odd but do-able intermittent fix).
