Question about Pramac GBW30P Encl Diesel Genset w/Perkins Eng

We have a Perkins diesel engine in a generator.Running hrs 5000 now giving problem that exhaust manifold and turbocharger gets red hot on load. air filter new. after cooler cleaned.now leakage in intake found. high fuel consumption reported and black smoke on load. can we rectify this fault by replacing injectors.any other cause.

The leakage fault of diesel generator is usually caused by the injection of corrosive coolant or seawater into the water radiator of the diesel engine.

Cause of failure: 1. The cooling water added to the cooling water radiator by operator is seawater, which results in the damage of internal waterway and external interface of diesel engine. Therefore, the use of diesel engines must be strictly in accordance with the provisions of the diesel engine operation. 2, the operator feed water radiator in the addition of strong anti-freeze corrosion, resulting in diesel engine waterway parts damage. Troubleshooting methods:
1.Disassemble damaged parts of diesel engine, replace damaged parts of diesel engine after washing water radiator and inner waterway of block with fresh water.
2, after assembly, adjustment, test machine found that the diesel engine returned to normal, the fault was eliminated.

SOURCE: diesel mixed with oil in the sump

You run again the generator but before running, check & mark the oil level. Then stop the generator & wait until the oil settle to the bottom of oil pan. Check the oil level again & if the oil level is higher than the marking before that's means you have an engine gasket leak.You need to replace that gasket.

Check the exhaust system, muffler etc. to make sure that it is not obstructed and that the muffler is large enough. Excess back pressure could cause overheating.

Perkins 20 kva diesel generator runs and stops in about 2 minutes.alternator failure is displayed on screen.


Ensure any engine control switch is set to the run position, with the load disengaged. Manually set the air shut off valve (if fitted) to the run position (see Fig. 18), Turn the key switch to the start position, which will energize the solenoid allowing the engine to crank over for a few seconds then start.

Check the instrument panel is showing normal running oil pressure, and the ammeter for charge to the engine batteries.
Allow the engine to run for five minutes checking the instruments are reading correctly. Stop the engine and check the oil and coolant levels, replenish if necessary.

I have caterpillar disel genretor of 456kva capacity,when i switch on generator within halfhour of running it's EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND TURBINE GETS RED HOT. i am not able to understand why gets red...


It is quite normal for the exhaust manifold and turbo to get very hot, especially when the engine is working hard running at high speed under load. Every time the mixture in the cylinder is ignited there is a small explosion producing a BIG flame and a lot of heat to push the piston down. A lot of this heat goes out the exhaust. During daylight it is usually not noticeable, but at night it will visibly glow up to a bright red.

In relation to the oil pressure dropping, providing the oil level is at the correct level, there may be a restriction in the gauze filter on the input of the oil pump due to sludge buildup. Once the engine warms up and the oil thins out, the oil pump can't work at maximum capacity. The drop in RPM could be caused by the turbo getting insufficient lubrication and cooling due to the low oil pressure reducing oil flow to the turbo causing it to not work at its optimum speed and efficiency and therefore through reduced air flow into the cylinders the engine would tend to loose speed especially when under high load. The drop in RPM could also be caused by a problem with fuel flow to the injector pump causing the engine to run lean which would not allow the engine to produce maximum power and also contribute to higher exhaust temperatures because the governor would have the throttle wide open to try and maintain the engine speed when the generator is required to produce maximum output.

Remember, what is heard as turbocharger noise may not be caused by a noisy turbocharger. Before replacing a turbocharger perform the following diagnosis.
A. If a loud whine or whistle is heard during acceleration and increases or decreases with rpm and load. This condition is most often the result of a loose clamp/hose at the turbocharger compressor outlet, charge air cooler inlet, outlet or at the intake manifold.

1. With the engine running at idle and the transmission in Park or Neutral with the parking brake set, feel for boost air escaping at each connection between the turbocharger compressor outlet and intake manifold. For limited access areas, spray soapy water on those connectors and look for bubbles.

2. Check the exhaust manifold and exhaust system for leaks.

MY Perkins generator 2300 series crank but can not start


I take it it's diesel. Have you renewed filters? Bleed fuel system Make sure there is plenty of diesel flowing out of tank (pipe not blocked) Check lift pump working
